Freitag ist #lernOS Tag: heute beginne ich mal mit der geplanten Aufteilung des lernOS für Dich Leitfadens in vier einzelne Leitfäden. Die neue Version wir hauptsächlich auf persönliches #Wissensmanagement (#pkm ) fokussieren. Die Lernpfade zu #gtd, #okr, und #wol werden in eigenständige Leitfäden ausgelagert.

When power is restored while servers are down, but the UPS is still discharging its last cells. Home Assistant will still be working by then, but I can't use #WOL to turn the servers back on because they are on different subnets.

And while writing this, I realised that one of the servers has two network interfaces and can be presented in both subnets for WOL purposes. Sounds like a plan.

Die meisten Netzkarten können Wake on LAN = #WoL

Über einen bestimmten Port rufe ich über die IP den Rechner auf und dieser fährt hoch.

Wenn ich fertig bin, fahre ich den PC wieder runter.

Today's desktop computer challenge: For the case I need access to my home desktop from remote, I trigger boot through wake on LAN and then remotely unlock the encrypted hard disks through SSH.

The challenge: Two encrypted hard disks. Solution: For the second hard drive add a key file located on the first hard disk as additional slot through cryptsetup, update the configuration in `/etc/crypttab`. Done.

Small fix, big impact 🔧

Initial situation: The network card in my parents’ mini server (NUC5PHY, RealTek 8168/8111) wasn’t properly entering Wake-on-LAN mode during shutdown. The server powers down automatically after inactivity and is woken up on demand via cron (every 1 min) from their laptops. Without WoL, it just stays off → manual power-on required.

Solution: A patch for the NetBSD PCI network driver to hook it into the power management framework. On shutdown, the NIC is now correctly configured for WoL.

First tests: works as expected ✅

There is a built-in #WOL functionality in #Proxmox that you can call through the API. This helped me a lot because my #HomeAssistant and #Proxmox are in different VLANs.
Now when the #EcoFlow battery is low, Home Assistant turns my most powerful server off through the Proxmox API, also sending a notification to a chat for all my #Plex users about it. When power returns, Home Assistant will turn the server back on automatically with another notification.
Isn’t that cool? 😎
