Behold the first image of an individual star outside of the Milky Way galaxy. The image of WOH G64, a star in the Large Magellanic Cloud just outside the Milky Way, 160,000 light-years away. The massive star, weighing 1,500 times more than the sun, is surrounded by a halo of gas and dust that may be material ejected from the star. An article published in the journal "Astronomy & Astrophysics" reports the creation of a detailed image of the red supergiant star WOH G64 and its surroundings, the first ever obtained of a star outside the Milky Way. A team of researchers led by astrophysicist Keiichi Ohnaka used the GRAVITY instrument on ESO's VLTI in Chile to obtain details of this star in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
