Harry Potter Day

All #WritersCoffeeClub and #ScribesAndMakers authors:
Last week we wrapped up our annual #MageMadness tournament, which features spellcasters from legend, literature, media, and real life facing off in one-on-one duels. Thanks to those who participated! We had a lot of fun watching the votes come in.
For next year, I think it would be great to include some wizards, witches, and magi from the fediverse #WritingCommunity. So, if you'd like to see how your favorite magic-using characters stack up against the best in the business, please respond to this toot with your pick and the book or series they feature in. And be sure to follow the hashtag so you can support them next March.

April 11: What's your most effective method for connecting with readers?
Most effective is casting a Charm spell. They'll like anything I write when they are under the influence. But it doesn't scale very well.
-
April 5: How can the physical form of the writing become part of the storytelling?
I've experimented with enchanted text that glows, explodes, dances across the page, and such. I haven't learned how to replicate the effects across a mass print run, however.
-
February 28: How well did this (short!) month go for you, in terms of writing?
I didn't get much writing done. I was busy doing all the prep work for #MageMadness.

RE: https://wandering.shop/@zadammac/116137228900516759
This sounds like my kind of dystopia.
-
February 25: What’s a unique habit you have while writing?
I like to place an illusion on my windows so that it looks like no one is home. That way, no one disturbs me while I'm writing.
-
@ChrisJagged "I would take care of the monster myself, you know, but I'm just so busy."
-
@floofpaldi @youseeatortoise well, a giant hedgehog was making a nuisance of itself in a nearby village. Often, villagers will just call out some swordmen to kill the creature, but the people of this particular hamlet commendably don't want to harm it, just encourage it to forage elsewhere. Thus, they prefer a magical solution.
So, they call me. Crafting the appropriate deterrent requires me to observe the animal for some time. So, there I was, hidden near the woods, waiting for the hedgehog to show. Perfect time to get some writing done.
-
January 27: What’s a technical skill you think should be more widespread?
Abjuration. It just doesn't get the love it deserves. You can't solve every problem with Fireball, you know.
-
January 14: What’s a service or skill you’d like to offer your fellow writers?
For those with looming deadlines, I would offer to cast a time dilation spell.
-
December 23. What’s a facet of the modern era of writing for which you’re thankful?
I'm very thankful that I no longer need to reanimate a horde of zombies just to get multiple copies of my book printed.

Sep 20: Do you have a lot of cooking equipment?I have a bunch of equipment for brewing potions. I haven't used it in a while. I should probably find some up-and-coming magic user to take some of it.
-
Sep 11: You've found a device that can doodle on the moon, in a way that is visible from earth. You have 10 minutes, what do you doodle?
Credit: Lydia Vvinters (@HeliaXyana)I would doodle a magic glyph that casts the Friends spell on anyone who sees it.

Sep 9: What incorrect assumptions might a reader make about you? They might assume I'm not a real wizard. Or even a real person.
😒
-
#ScribesAndMakers Sep 6: What's the hardest thing about gardening?
Keeping the adventurers from trampling the bean sprouts.
-
What's something essential to your process you think other writers should try?
I place illusions on my windows that make it look like no one is home, so I can work uninterrupted.
-
June 30. When is a piece of writing done?
When I cast Mend on it.

May 27: What is a ‘load-bearing’ part of your non-writerly life that makes writing possible for you?
Like many other recent prompts, the answer to this one is **Magic**.
Purists would say that fobbing off life tasks to various magical apparatus or spells is a debasement of the arcane, but really what is magic even for if not to make life better?

https://www.youtube.com/embed/n8Fb4Pb6lHI We tried to survive a dungeon. We failed... gloriously.
Fireballs were misfired, spells missed, goblins chased us, and someone definitely farted.
Join us as we fight (and mostly flee) from everything this cursed cave has to offer — with only one rule: TAKE THE BOOK!

And we have our Champion!!
The clear winner of the inaugural #MageMadness Wizard tournament is the Russian Queen of Night and Day, the Legendary Baba Yaga. Thanks to all who participated by voting, and to all the magic users who didn't make it to the top — better luck next year!
I'll be posting complete results with scores on my blog, so check it out if you want to relive the Magic.

28 What would your best creative life look like if you weren't bound by reality?
Since I'm not terribly bound by reality anyhow, I suppose it would look much like what it looks like now

#EpigraphCoffeeClub"It's all @saposcat 's fault." — @gahlearner
27 What’s the strangest situation or place where you’ve written?
I was in the middle of an interplanar teleportation when I had a really great idea for a side character in a project I was working on. I had to jot it down in the margin of the scroll that held the teleport incantation.

25 Describe your workflow if it had to be 100% analog.
The only thing digital in my workflow is the finger I point at the wood in the fireplace to magically light a fire. It sets the mood perfectly.

#EpigraphCoffeeClub"I think you can extract iambic pentameter from homogenized Islets of Langerhans." — @cstross
22 What distracts you the most from writing? How do you deal?
I'm probably most distracted by watching my miniature monsters. They are so fascinating.
-
12 Do you play games? If so, do they influence your creativity?
I do not, because I cannot find anyone who will play against me. Everyone thinks I am using magic to cheat.
They aren't entirely wrong.

#EpigraphCoffeeClub"People don't decide to read or reject a book after reading a single sentence. The first sentence is like a warm-up, before going into a longer sprint." — @ignova
5 What writing-related tools or resources have you found most effective?
The illusions I put on my windows that make it look as though nobody is home are the only thing that allows me to get any work done.
-
2 Are you inspired by nature? Please explain.
For those who consider magic to be a part of nature, the answer is yes!
-
Get ready everyone! In 11 days, #MageMadness begins.
It's a tournament featuring all of your favorite wizards, witches, warlocks, sorcerers, and other magic-using persons.
I'll be posting head-to-head matchups starting on February 16, and you get to vote on who advances to the next round.
Follow this hashtag to play along, and may the best Mage win!

21. Do you ever get inspiration from dreams?
Absolutely. I often visit the Astral Plane in my dreams. You would not believe some of the characters I've met there.

@TreeVor I think I've visited that world before.
It was nice, but the sunsets were just a little too orange for my taste, and everything smelled like applesauce.

7. What's your favourite book? Why?Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
Every time I open it up I always glean new approaches to spell casting. And his insane wit is super entertaining.

16. What ancillary writing apps do you find the most useful?I find that the static illusions I place on my windows convince people that I'm not home so I can focus on my writing in peace.
