  1. 🚨 #TechWeenieAlert

“OpenAI chief executive #SamAltman downplayed the threat of #AI #killingJobs just days after #WiseTech informed the police of “threats of violence” against its #CEO, who is using the #technology to replace thousands of its #workers.”

“The #Jobs picture is likely to be very different than we thought,” Altman told Commonwealth Bank boss #MattComyn in a virtual appearance at an AI event in Sydney hosted by the bank. “I don’t think we’re going to have the kind of #JobsApocalypse that some of the companies in our space advocate, or talk about.”

Bull shit boi at it again.

  6. “Staff at #WiseTech have been waiting almost three months to be told if they are among the 2,000 people the logistics software company is to cut due to advances in #AI, with #workers criticising the wait as stressful and “ridiculous”.

The comments come as its founder on Tuesday told #investors an #AIAgent could learn a human’s job in just 15 minutes, according to the #AustralianFinancialReview.

The Australian Stock Exchange-listed company announced in late February that it would #LayOff almost 30% of its #workforce across 40 countries, with 2,000 of the 7,000 jobs set to go over the next 18 months.

Some areas would be hit harder than others, with product and development and customer service teams expected to be reduced by up to 50%, the chief #executive, #ZubinAppoo, told an investor briefing in February.

“The era of manually writing #code as the core act of #engineering is over,” Appoo said.”

  16. Lately I've been tossing around this concept of "user-quality".

It's not something I have heard talked about much in tech.

The idea is that instead of trying to design and scale your app to the maximum number of users (usually the "marginal user"), design it around only attracting or grouping users based on "quality". What is quality? for me that is only interacting with users with good intentions, and/or good first-hand knowledge.

  17. While I believe in mindfulness and awareness a lot more than simplistic blanket bans (that can just be circumvented), the fact that Australia recently banned most major social networks for under 16s, should highlight just how toxic these apps are even for adults who care about their own wellness.

The ban includes Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, Instagram and X. Notably, Youtube is exempt even though I think its just as bad when accessed directly instead of an alternative client.

  18. Quitting the "scrollables" is totally worth it.

I quit all the big centralized scroller apps. Yes finally even YouTube has been deleted from my phone and blocked/privacy-redirected on my laptop.

    Now I use:
    - Miniflux RSS feed
    - Curated Mastodon feed
    - Podverse podcasts
    - Freetube + Grayjay for music and video search/follow
    - Kavita ebooks

I could reduce to just RSS but the other clients are nice to use for their respective media type.
