En los bosques helados de Finlandia, durante el invierno de 1939, un campesino acostumbrado a la caza silenciosa terminó convertido en una figura temida en el campo de batalla.
Su nombre era Simo Häyhä.Cuando comenzó la Winter War, tras la invasión de la Unión Soviética a Finlandia, Häyhä se unió al ejército finlandés como francotirador.
No era un soldado profesional ni buscaba notoriedad.
Antes de la guerra había pasado la mayor parte de su vida trabajando como agricultor y cazador cerca de Rautjärvi, y aquellas habilidades adquiridas en silencio se convirtieron en su mayor ventaja.El escenario de combate eran bosques cubiertos de nieve y temperaturas que descendían hasta los -40 °C.
Vestido con camuflaje blanco, Häyhä pasaba horas inmóvil esperando el momento preciso.
A diferencia de otros francotiradores, utilizaba miras de hierro en su rifle, evitando reflejos que pudieran delatar su posición.
Para impedir que el vapor de su respiración lo traicionara en el aire helado, colocaba nieve en la boca y compactaba nieve frente al rifle para estabilizarlo.
Cada detalle era cuestión de supervivencia.En poco más de 100 días de combate, se le atribuyeron más de 500 bajas entre soldados soviéticos, lo que lo convirtió en el francotirador más letal documentado en una guerra moderna.
Entre las tropas soviéticas circulaba un apodo que resumía el miedo que inspiraba: “La Muerte Blanca”.Pero la guerra rara vez deja héroes intactos.
El 6 de marzo de 1940, una bala explosiva impactó su rostro, destruyendo gran parte de su mandíbula.
Fue encontrado inconsciente en la nieve y evacuado del frente, permaneciendo en coma durante días.
Despertó el 13 de marzo, justo cuando la guerra llegaba a su fin.Häyhä sobrevivió, aunque su rostro quedó marcado para siempre.
Fue ascendido a subteniente y regresó a una vida tranquila, lejos del ruido de la fama, evitando durante décadas hablar de la guerra.Su historia no es una celebración de la violencia.
Es el retrato de un hombre común atrapado en un conflicto brutal, donde la disciplina, el silencio y la resistencia fueron sus únicas herramientas para sobrevivir./Una película en desarrollo llamada The White Death que está siendo producida en Finlandia y está prevista para estrenarse alrededor de 2027.
