  1. A little #ForestFloor vignette from yesterday afternoon. There is no fresh green here, yet, though Aspen and Willow catkins are bursting out and should soon be flowering, leaves and non-woody plants will follow..
Meantime #WildflowerWednesday #WildflowerHour will have to settle for the resilient leaves of Pink-flowered #Wintergreen Pyrola asarifolia against a backdrop of beautiful #lichen on a fallen bit of birch trunk. #LichenSubscribe #BorealForest #Alberta #Canada #spring #SolaceInNature

  2. Check out this photo I got on a hike in the pine barrens a few weeks ago! I'm really happy with how this one turned out ^^

I believe the plant species is striped wintergreen (Chimaphila maculata) or at least something in that genus

  3. Some more lichens among the pine needles. Also present: partridgeberry leaves and berries (Mitchella repens) and wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens).

"#wintergreens are partial #mycoheterotrophs, which means that they have an alternative to #photosynthesis for acquiring their energy to grow. They can parasitically take sugars and minerals from #fungus in woodland #soils. This ability is likely part of why they are so challenging to propagate in captivity. There have also been suggestions that the presence of specific #fungi is necessary for the tiny seeds to germinate."

  5. #FotoMontag #MondayMotivation-- well I took these photos yesterday- Monday- even got the editing done last night, but no oomph to post before bed...lol
A couple of views from the #garden around the acreage and in the #bush #BorealForest still lots of snow around- though probably no more than half of usual, lots of bare spots as there always are, allowing glimpses of #WinterColour #WinterGreen #mosstodon #LichenSubscribe #SolaceInNature

  6. Back on the trail of the taste of #RootBeer (tasting like smell of Germolene). Looks like Wintergreen is the common element.

    This is too funny.

    According to Wikipedia
#Germolene is "...scented with oil of wintergreen...."

    And on the #Wintergreen page?
"...it is often a component of root beer, which originated in the United States..."

I can't do enough ROFLs for this. My childhood palette was spot on. 🤣

  7. #SixOnSaturday the first half of #February was mostly mild, though not serious melting weather (that's a good thing at this time of year!) Usual late winter scenes of #moss #lichen #wintergreen , tantalising crystal #snow , dried #leaves as memories of growing seasons past and promise of future growth!
