Sharing a post from another one of my neighbors (who used to be involved with the #CommunityGarden years ago). One of these days, I'll get back into #HAMRadio.
"Many thanks to the folks at Dole’s Orchard for inviting us to set up our ham radio stations at the orchard. This is an annual event in North America called '#FieldDay' and its purpose is to practice emergency communications in the event of a disaster. Field Day lasts 24 hours and there were over 6,000 participants. 'When all else fails.' #WinterFieldDay is held at the end of January under much different conditions."

Survived winter field day, going to do a blog post on it. Weather and site challenges required us to think on the fly. But in the end we got 505 QSO’s and beat last year with only 1 HF station!#winterfieldday #HamRadio

#winterfieldday was fun. I finally figured out how to make sure I can use my Icom IC-705 with a Xiegu XPA-125B on digital and it doesn't kill the USB serial connection. I call that a win! #hamradio

Fun fact: I'm one of 43 stations (as of now, count expected to rise) that openly admit to achieving no contact during #WinterFieldDay 2026, according to https://winterfieldday.org/results.php
Fellow honest ones, I appreciate you 😍 !
Learned later: It ain't neccessarily so. See the organizers' answer to this toot.

I took part in #WinterFieldDay, as a lowly 1H DX station. Spent quite a few hours in front of the rig, both Sa and So. I almost exclusively did #JS8.
I once came very close, just the final confirmation from the other station was missing to complete the QSO. I heard other WFD stations 3 or 4 times. But my end result: Not one single QSO.
Never had that in a contest before when I seriously tried to take part.
Oh, well... If all worked out nicely first time, successes wouldn't be so exhilarating.

Well, Winter Field Day is over and I had a ton of fun.
It was the perfect wrap for a week of vacation, during which I also tested for and passed my exam for my upgrade to Amateur Extra.
I even got to pick up a few QSOs for WFD down in the formerly "forbidden" sections of the bands by appending "stroke alpha echo" to the old callsign. Good times!
Thanks @WFDA for reminding us what 100w and a wire can do :)

Working WFD CW today. Didn't yesterday due to doing storm preparations. Not a serious contester here, just pulled up not1mm, and am using it to send code so that I don't slow down more serious folks with my bad keying, just using the key when I need to send something that I didn't have a macro for, or to send slowly. Just now, I was delighted that I copied a 2x3 call on first hearing at 35WPM and then was deflated to hear "TEST" afterwards. I didn't know what contests are currently active, but I'm trying to do WFD not a contest.

Day two for #winterfieldday
There's about a foot of snow outside and it's chilly in the shack, but that's the whole point

Having a full-spectrum band scope is a game-changing feature for contesting. Immediately answer the question "what bands are active?" And then zoom in to a waterfall as wide as the band and just click around to the activity you see to make contacts. This was my first time operating my Hermes Lite 2 HF SDR and it was pretty dang nifty. #hamradio #winterfieldday #sdr

Welp, WFD is on the move for us. Our usual site will be closed because of the impending snow storm, so it's on to an alternate location!

Hello Fedi - sorry that I neglected you last few days.
Been getting my club, W9YRC, ready for Winter Field Day @WFDA

"Every year, hams from across the country brave the cold, string up antennas in the snow, and put their skills to the test—and we invite you to join in the adventure."
This doesn't sound like it, but we #hamRadio operators from outside "across the country" (of the USA) are also invited. And one totally can take part from the convenience of the heated shack at home. Not bad.
It'll try my 1st WFD.
Next weekend, 2026-01-24 16 UTC to 2026-01-25 21:59 UTC.

I had a great #HamRadio #WinterFieldDay yesterday showing a buddy the wonders of HF. We spoke with people coast to coast and he was particularly excited to make a contact with someone in his small rural hometown several hours away.
He's a licensed tech but messaged me today to say he's planning to study and take the general exam in a few months at the swap meet. Woohoo! Thanks to all the folks out there who were patient and welcoming with him while he drove the radio for a bit. 😊

Some friends and I had a fantastic #winterfieldday weekend at a state park cabin. How many radios do 3 people need? 30ish? 😂 We hunted satellites, used meshtastic, erected a variety of wire, horizontal and loop antennas, used phone modes, data modes and cw/morse code. Can’t wait for next year! #hamradio

This was my #hamradio club’s site for #winterfieldday today. We were at Woodlot Park in South Brunswick, aka “Base Camp”. It was very cold and windy. 🥶 #amateurradio
