Since EVs drain more battery heating the cabin in winter but still need to keep the windows defrosted, how about defrost wires on the windshield, just like the rear window? Even the side windows?
Would that not be more electrically efficient?
Has it been done before?

Source: I keep seeing "tips" on maximising range by using the seat heaters instead of cabin HVAC. That works for about two minutes until the windows are fogged up. Not an option

I'm heading out for an early appointment in Barrie and checking the weather to see if I'll have any challenges during my 25 minute travel time. I'll have to navigate through some snow - duh... it's Barrie - but poorly salted roads is also an issue. Ontario is facing a shortage of road salt due to an early onset of winter, higher than normal ice days early in the season and some supply chain issues with suppliers. Currently municipalities are trying to stretch their dwindling supply and mixing in more sand. That additional use of sand will result in higher cleaning costs in the spring but right now it's their only option. Suppliers believe that they'll solve the shortage problem in the next month but for now, get used to a bit more snow on your roads.#CanadaIsAwesome #WinterDriving #SlipnSlide

LPT: If you have a car, quit messing with jumper cables and get a rechargeable jump starter.
It’s that time of year, where it’s bitter cold — 10°F or -12°C tonight — and that weather separates the good car batteries from the old car batteries. Twice today, I was charging my car at a gas station (ironic, right?) and someone couldn’t start their truck. The first guy didn’t have jumper cables. The second guy did, but the other car couldn’t give his dead battery enough power.
Enter me, with my rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. Clamped it to the battery terminals and their trucks started right up. (Okay, fine. The second guy needed two cranks.) Two quick jump starts, and my battery pack was only down to 70%, and that’s after it sat in the cold car for months.
This advice goes double for EV or hybrid owners. Those cars can *accept* a jump start if the 12-volt battery is low, but they cannot *give* a jump start, because that would overload the inverter and risk frying sensitive and expensive electronics. (Read the owner’s manual.) Having a pack can help others, but also help you! It’s also a giant phone battery if you need it.
And let’s face it. Jumper cables are the ultimate life hack, but they are intimidating. They sit in your trunk until you have an emergency, and then you have to remember how they hook up (to a ground on the dead car, not the negative terminal). One false move and you’re shooting sparks, shorting something, or zapping yourself.

@KathyReid I was on a bus earlier this year when there was a fender bender there. They managed to do it in a way that let traffic keep flowing, but still ... Edmonton drivers should already remember how to do winter driving.

I have to admit that for a fraction of winter, driving is a lot of fun. In the summer a brain dead chimp should be able to keep a car on the road, but winter adds some skill requiring fun. Wheee!

Long distance travelling in -40 degree C temperatures. Would you do this, unless you absolutely have too? If driving with an ICE vehicle those conditions mean you CAN’T turn your car off without a block heater or you will never start it again from that temp. #ElectricVehicles #WinterDriving

In wintery weather, please remember that the vehicle you are driving was NOT equipped with the following upgrades:
- Non-slip tires
- Exemption from effects of ice, slush, and liquids
- Anti-gravity crash prevention
- A large flexible force-field bubble
- Infinite braking power
- Headlights that auto-dim when they are blinding the three drivers in front of you -
Even though there are still fires causing trouble in BC, we now have snow coming to heavily travelled mountain passes at night. Now is a good time to reassess your vehicle winter emergency kits. What got used up or expired, what worked and what was unneeded extra weight. Time to look at your tires, check heaters, anti-freeze and make sure everything is ready for winter. Lots of emergency items have a cross-over for any kind of delay or being stuck on the road.
One nifty little item I have is a car plug-in heated blanket. I even use it in the house when it's not quite warm enough to start the wood stove. I'm going to get an extra one.

Very slick driving in #RochMN even on plowed roads. Nearly got in an accident. I’m still uneasy with #antilock-brakes . It feels so much like I’m fighting them that I can’t think of what else to do. Doesn’t help with fighting kids in the back. #parenthood So on the way home i practiced engaging the brakes and steering at the same time. That seemed to help the stopping distance a lot. #WinterDriving #minnesota Any other ideas out there on this topic?

I've experience microclimates here on the #OregonCoast before, but never with cold. Tried to go to the grocery store last night. Roads were wet and ice free when I left. On the way, temp fell 4 degrees F, and the parking lot was a skating rink I barely got out of alive. On the way back, temp went up four degrees and though there was a little ice on my hill, no problems getting up. Total distance traveled? 2.6 miles!
