We live in cold New England. As we've aged, the winters have gotten harder on us. We decided years ago that, instead of buying each other yule gifts, we would spend the money on a winter getaway (some time in Mid January to Mid March or so). The goal is to get somewhere warm, and sunny. Ideally on the ocean, but a lake beach or a pool would be good. Also, a hot tub is really a necessity these days due to my spouse's legs doing ::waves hands vaguely:: weird things.

We used to go to Florida and stay in cheap motels. But then I found cruises were a really great deal. So we took many cruises out of Florida, until Florida decided that they didn't want our money any more (we are a queer couple, my spouse is trans).

Then we shifted to cruises out of northern ports. Advantages being we could drive to the ports, or catch a bus that will take us there. So we could afford slightly more expensive cruises because of the savings on air fares. But those days are coming to an end, too. We're on a fixed income, but the cruise prices have gone up.

So now I'm digging around again. Looking at Tucson, Arizona (a bastion of LGBTQ+ folks) and Las Vegas. Sunny, hot, pools, hot tubs… AARP has travel packages for me. They're still a bit more expensive than I wish, but I can't have everything. We'll fly in, get transport to our lodging, then just lay by the pool and maybe go out a few times for dinner, maybe shop at a market (if I can find us lodging near some sort of market).

It'll definitely break up the winter for us. Years ago I wouldn't even have considered Vegas as a place to go. As I age, though, things change. It's … weird.

So if y'all have thoughts on places in/around Vegas (we don't drink, we don't gamble, we will literally be laying by the pool reading or playing quiet board/card games in some spot in the hotel) or Tucson that might work well with some proximity to, oh, I dunno nothing too adventurous, I'm all ears.

I got a hand me down 2015 Kindle Paperwhite from my daughter—is that a hand-me-up?—after we upgraded her to a new Kobo Libra Color.

I used #WinterBreak to jailbreak and got #KOReader installed and it’s a nice little reader that syncs easily with Calibre. No Amazon involved.

The Kobo Libra is an extremely nice #eReader with great integration with Overdrive/Libby to get library books, but if you’re looking to get something on the cheap and save some ewaste, I can recommend jailbreaking a kindle

I had already liberated all my Kindle books months ago and was about to sell my old Kindle Oasis in light of Amazons recent decision to disallow downloading ebooks for reading in non-kindle software.

However, just in the nick of time I found a recently released jailbreak that works on the device. I then installed Koreader which offers a vastly better reader experience with easy access to alternative book platforms including my self-hosted server.

I jailbreaked my Kindle Scribe yesterday. Turns out there's a vulnerability in all kindle firmware versions across devices, (not including the color e-ink Kindles, but that won't be for long) there isn't a patch released yet, so we have a new jailbreak, called WinterBreak, released this new year's day. Works great! (although I'd appreciate if KOReader gets pen annotation support for the Scribe)

WinterBreak tool can jailbreak most recent Kindle hardware

Amazon’s Kindle devices run a custom Linux distribution that’s locked tightly to Amazon’s ecosystem. But jailbreaking a Kindle opens the door to installing third-party software that can change the behavior and add functionality.

While Amazon doesn’t make it easy to do that, a new tool called WinterBreak takes advantage of a security vulnerability in Amazon’s software to let you jailbreak most recent Kindle devices. Released on New Year’s Day, WinterBreak works with pretty much every Kindle released since 2012 running firmware versions 5.18.0.1.0.1 or earlier.

There’s some risk involved in Jailbreaking a Kindle device – don’t expect any support from Amazon if you break your eReader during the process. And some users have said that their Kindles have been “bricked,” (stuck in an unusable state), by jailbreaking attempts that went wrong, so proceed with caution.

And this is a new tool – while many folks have already used it to successfully jailbreak their Kindles, some users are encountering some problems. So I’d recommend reading the announcement thread at the MobileRead Forums before using WinterBreak to see whether any issues regarding your particular Kindle device have been reported, and if any solutions have been found.

But if you’re willing to accept some risk, the installation instructions are pretty straightforward – basically you just need to put your Kindle into airplane mode, plug it into a computer so it shows up as a storage device, and then extract a file downloaded from the KindleModding site to your Kindle, reboot, and follow some instructions.

That said, you need to do this every time you reboot your Kindle unless you also install a “hotfix” that makes the jailbreak persistent. And once your device is jailbroken, you’ll also probably want to install a few more tools including the Kindle Unified Application Launcher and MobileRead Package Installer to simplify the process of installing and running third-party applications.

Finally, you may want to disable over-the-air updates, because there’s a good chance that Amazon will try to push a firmware update in the future that will patch the vulnerability exploited by WinterBreak. If you have no interest in jailbreaking your device, that’s probably a good thing – Amazon should be patching security vulnerabilities. But if you’ve got a jailbroken Kindle, the easiest way to ensure it stays jailbroken is to prevent your device from installing Amazon’s official firmware updates.

So what you can do with a jailbroken Kindle? Among other things you can install third-party eBook readers to add native support for EPUB of other file formats, manga readers, music or audiobook players, third-party games like chess or NetHack, or even an alternate operating system such as Duokan.
