  1. Bicycled to the Rushford Public Library.

Managed to miss the freezing rain.

My brother in the NorthEast part of the country got almost 2 meters of snow from the blizzard. His phone wasn't working right Sunday so I called again today. He's okay and exhausted from shoveling snow the past 2 days.

  2. #BostonMA - February #WinterBikeRide

#BostonBikes, in collaboration with MassBike, is organizing a #WinterBike ride series.

    February 28, 2026
    10:30am - 12:30pm
    Central Square, East Boston
    Boston, MA 02128

"These are slow-paced rides that include a mix of bike path and on-street riding in neighborhoods and end with free hot chocolate."

  3. Bicycled the Root River Trail from Rushford to just past Peterson and back, had lunch, then bicycled toward Houston and turned back at first slushy ice patch covering the whole path and bicycled on Creekside trail. Two and a half hours of bicycling time on an unseasonably warm day.

    9 bicyclists, 7 walkers, 3 dog walkers.

  4. On today's #ottbike #Brodie #winterbike #Bridlewood ride I tried to add some paths and other roads to my usual route which I was getting tired of. Some of the side streets proved not ready for easy riding yet due to slushy conditions and the path around the pond is still not fully open. Looking forward to the no snow and no salt season and getting back on the NorcoSceneVLT #ebiike.

  5. Back on the #winterbike #ottbike after being off over a week due to the cold spell and snow. Temps look good for rest of this winter season.

  6. Bicycled to the grocery store and back in -12 C and the temperature was getting lower during a sunny day. No adventures today, definitely not tomorrow when -33C is the *high* for the day. Not going to risk frostbite.

General strike day in Minnesota Friday, 2026-01-23, so wasn't going anywhere anyway in solidarity, so tomorrow is the time time to read the books I checked out from the public library.

  7. Winter bike finally ready. Originally thought I could make the original mechanical disc brakes work by replacing the cables. They were however too corroded to be saved.

When I put the rear wheel back on, the derailleur hanger snapped, it was severely corroded as well. That is the most annoying thing to break on a bike since there are so many variations. At one point I thought that was the end of the bike and then I found a shop with the right on in stock.

Oh, I was unable to get the part of the hanger mounted to the derailleur off so I had to replace that as well.

When putting the chain back on I realised that the crank wasn’t spinning freely. Scratch that, I would probably spend 50W-75W just to turn that.

Now, my Orbea Carpe that started its life with a 1x7 drivetrain has a full Shimano Cues 1x11 speed drivetrain and good hydraulic brakes.

Back to commuting by bike again.

  8. Bicycled a small part of the Root River trail the past couple of days. Only picture I took I thought turned out okay.

Thought bicycling where the footprints were would make it easier, but it made it more bumpy. I tried bicycling in the same path I biked before and it did not go well either. Have to forge a new path in the snow for comfort. Even ice was fine, bumpy ice was too jarring to my body.

  9. Not the first, but the second, #NorcoSceneVLT #ebike #winterbike #ottbike #Bridlewood & #GlenCairn ride of the New Year. Side streets were messy and slippery but the studded tires handled them well, still I avoided them whenever possible. Main streets were bare but wet.

  10. Bicycled 13 Kilometers on a snow covered Root River Trail. One of the hardest bicycling trips I've done because even with studded bicycle tires, the way the ice melted and refroze was very bumpy and the snow was up to the wheel rims in spots. Reminded me of the time I tried mountain biking on a single track dealing with roots and rocks and decided 'nope, not for me'.

  11. Today's #Bridlewood #otbike #winterbike ride was interesting. After doing the #EmeraldMeadows pond (part of the path was still not cleared but snow packed and rideable) I headed toward #Trail24 at #OldQuarry and discovered it was still rideable. There were fat bike and ski tracks as well as parts packed from walking. However someone had been through on something that left a caterpillar track on it and i could not avoid it and every time my tires went over it it was like rumble strip on a highway causing the bike to slip and slide. When I got to the Trans Canada Trail I diverted to that which was not as smooth as the forest trail normally is but butter than dealing with the caterpillar tracks. I headed back home via the small and large hydro line paths.

  12. Sigh. You'd think that the city of Edmonton winter snow removal crew would understand how to prevent ice forming; ie: don't brush the bike lane just before freezing rain. Unless, of course, you *want* a curling rink. www.instagram.com/reel/DSAcIA9... #winterbike #yegbike
