  1. Bicycled to the Rushford Public Library.

Managed to miss the freezing rain.

My brother in the NorthEast part of the country got almost 2 meters of snow from the blizzard. His phone wasn't working right Sunday so I called again today. He's okay and exhausted from shoveling snow the past 2 days.

  3. Bicycled the Root River Trail from Rushford to just past Peterson and back, had lunch, then bicycled toward Houston and turned back at first slushy ice patch covering the whole path and bicycled on Creekside trail. Two and a half hours of bicycling time on an unseasonably warm day.

    9 bicyclists, 7 walkers, 3 dog walkers.

  5. On today's #ottbike #Brodie #winterbike #Bridlewood ride I tried to add some paths and other roads to my usual route which I was getting tired of. Some of the side streets proved not ready for easy riding yet due to slushy conditions and the path around the pond is still not fully open. Looking forward to the no snow and no salt season and getting back on the NorcoSceneVLT #ebiike.

  6. Winter bike finally ready. Originally thought I could make the original mechanical disc brakes work by replacing the cables. They were however too corroded to be saved.

When I put the rear wheel back on, the derailleur hanger snapped, it was severely corroded as well. That is the most annoying thing to break on a bike since there are so many variations. At one point I thought that was the end of the bike and then I found a shop with the right on in stock.

Oh, I was unable to get the part of the hanger mounted to the derailleur off so I had to replace that as well.

When putting the chain back on I realised that the crank wasn’t spinning freely. Scratch that, I would probably spend 50W-75W just to turn that.

Now, my Orbea Carpe that started its life with a 1x7 drivetrain has a full Shimano Cues 1x11 speed drivetrain and good hydraulic brakes.

Back to commuting by bike again.

  9. Winter biking is interesting. Normally, drive trains last 3 years before the salt eats them up. This year, I started by replacing the mechanical disc brakes with hydraulics. Then the derailleur hanger broke when I put the rear wheel back.

I finally tracked down a new hanger and mounted it just to find that a part of the old hanger was permanently stuck to the derailleur. New derailleur acquired and mounted. Now I realise that the crank is not spinning freely or rather I actually have to use a lot of force just to turn it around.

I remove the crankset and now I am presented with a rusted bottom bracket. It’s such bad shape, I can hardly make the tool fit. I have now learned that I can use an M7 bolt to secure the tool to the old bottom bracket to remove it so there is hope although it’s Sunday and I have no M7 bolt. With snow and probably ice on the roads, this means no bike commuting for me tomorrow.

Next puzzle comes if I manage to remove the old bottom bracket. To figure out what I need to replace it with. This was the end of my old winter bike. I knew which BB standard I needed, but it was not available anywhere.

I wonder if I will be able to remove the old BB on my Orbea Carpe and if I succeed, will I be able to find a replacement BB.

  10. Today's #Bridlewood #otbike #winterbike ride was interesting. After doing the #EmeraldMeadows pond (part of the path was still not cleared but snow packed and rideable) I headed toward #Trail24 at #OldQuarry and discovered it was still rideable. There were fat bike and ski tracks as well as parts packed from walking. However someone had been through on something that left a caterpillar track on it and i could not avoid it and every time my tires went over it it was like rumble strip on a highway causing the bike to slip and slide. When I got to the Trans Canada Trail I diverted to that which was not as smooth as the forest trail normally is but butter than dealing with the caterpillar tracks. I headed back home via the small and large hydro line paths.

"Vision Zero doesn’t discourage people from moving by a certain mode. It demands we make movement safe," Bidgood said in one post. "Winter cycling is only ‘unsafe’ when the city chooses not to maintain safe conditions. Not maintaining infrastructure and then blaming the people who use it is the opposite of Vision Zero."

  12. @NoRomBasic @bikemonterey The new #AASHTO Bike Guide really is going to come out and it will have more recommendations around protected bike lanes. Don't recall offhand what it includes. In snow country those lower curbs permit snow plowing into the bike lane which obviously isn't ideal. If they come back through and plow the snow truly away, that's great.

No such thing as too many lights

On the frame is a Govee LED strip, powered by a rechargeable battery bank I got off Amazon.... Attached with zip ties and clear silicon caulking

Pictured is my "Blue Glow" setting, but I have an Xmas Lights setting that twinkles and flashes and does all kinds of stuff

  14. #WinterBike friends -- how do your kids keep their legs warm on the #BikeToSchool?
My 4th grader is riding her own bike now so a blanket is no longer an option.

Also taking recommendations for handlebar mitts for small people.

    Thank you!!
