Last wine photo today. I promise!
What's a trip to Portugal without a little wine tasting? I always promised to visit Herdade Aldeia de Cima, Luisa Amorim's own estate in Alentejo. That's her in the photo. Behind her to the right is the city of Beja. Needless to say, there were lots of good wines from this already fine estate, the 2019 Garrafeira red being my favorite.

A little respite....From a big, ripe vintage, this '09 shows more elegance now, and it tastes just great. As it evolves in the glass, there's a surprising touch of minerality and some grip on the finish. It's delicious, beautifully crafted and in prime form.
Will it still hold? No rush. But this is in a good place. In fact, it is just gorgeous. New ones in the upper $40s.
Crasto is one of my favorite Douro producers.

Mature yet surprisingly fresh, this elegant old 1997 Noval LBV is in fine form. Textured with caressing velvet, it still has a firm finish, precision and tasty fruit. Over several days, it stayed just great and even improved. It's a winner even now, 25+ years on. #port #winesofportugal #noval #wine

Part 5 (the last part!)
There was also the 2022 "fresh from Amphora" Nat'Cool Branco offering with Niepoort too, with Perrum, Rabo de Ovelha and Manteúdo. This was straightforward, but bright, clean and lively. For $20 for one liter, it a best buy. Amphora wines can be a little pricier at times, although Rocim's own Branco Vinho de Talha was just $20 (750ml). Not the best, but good QPR.Lots of good things to explore. Nice job from Rocim and partners.

Final stop this trip: Rocim's Amphora Day. It is pretty crowded, they've got a lot of wineries, a lot of consumers, and a very good vibe. I had a lot of good tastings here, more to come.

Elegant and holding well, this Branco has integrated its wood very well now too. This is a perfect food wine now, and in prime time. Of course, it has plenty of life left. If there is a flaw, it is pretty pricey ($100).

From a big vintage, this is now drinking beautifully, rounding into form. If you have some, this is a great time to open a bottle. If you have a lot, don't panic, because there is no rush. It is still rather young in its fruit profile, although the tannins have fallen off a lot. This was $53 on release, and it certainly doesn't seem overpriced. It was beautiful then, and it has justified my faith in it.

My building switched to heat. Time for Port? Well...One more summer wine. This 2016 is gloriously fresh, so crisp and precise that it becomes irresistible just for that. Plus the fruit is subtly concentrated, even a little rich. It is very dry, yet fruity and rather tasty too. I wish I could tell you how much longer this is going to last, but I wouldn't hold your breath waiting. It seems to be in the middle of its aging curve, not near the end. $18 on release. #vinhoverde #winesofportugal

When I first saw this 2014 Quinta do Portal • Late Bottled Vintage Port I was surprised at how fine it was from such a mediocre vintage. Tasting it again, only makes me underscore that point. Nice job in a tough year. $32. I hope this doesn't post twice--suddenly things weren't posting from Tusky.

So, I am immersed in emerging regions. They often aren't all the way there yet. Their fan boys tend to think everything's worth 98 points. 😁 I tend to disagree. But it's important to remember some context.
This picture is from the Consortio event in New York where they had an incredible 200 producers from Piemonte. They said 300 people could make Barbaresco or Barolo.
Two regions I like to compare in some ways are Naoussa in Greece and Bairrada in Portugal.
Neither has many producers. Last time I was in Naoussa, there were about 15 registered producers of Xinomavro. Better things are coming, along with critical mass. That last is important if it's not just a private club.

I keep waiting for this Syrah-dominated blend to come around, but I'm not sure it ever will. The tannins are pretty hard here. It is now at age 10. In terms of mid-palate finesse and precision, complexity and nuance, it does a great job. But I'm not sure the balance will ever be quite right. About €60 in Portugal.

The hardest thing about wine is drinking windows to me. Voodoo magic. The truth is, well stored wines fade very gradually. That means it is not a black-and-white answer, but more a line to draw as to when you think the wine is too old. Many issues there, including taste! So, it is good to go back and reevaluate things sometimes. Actuality is better than guessing. #wine #wineadvocate #robertparker #winesofportugal

Winemaker Antonio Maçanita called their Syrah the winery’s Barossa Shiraz (although from Alentejo). Owner Michael Brian Reynolds Mollet is a descendant of the Reynolds family, known for the English painter, Sir Joshua Reynolds, but to wine lovers for Mouchão. The labels are atmospheric. Wines like Cem Reis have gained plaudits, but they are big, flirting with 16 points, not my style. Lower-level and whites are often good values, more manageable. #wine #winesofportugal #robertparker #wineadvocate

The Madeirense wines, the Titans and more. The flow from Portugal never stops. Those people make a lot of wine and they drink a lot too. 😄 New report.

The first Rosé of 2022 for the 2023 season, for me at least, this is a blend by Fontes da Cunha of Touriga Nacional and Encruzado, showcasing the star grapes from Dão. Nicely done. It should be great this summer. $20

The pic is de Mello and Pereira (left) of Caves Transmontanas, a great producer for sparklers, who flew in with their new RD sparkler. That's part of a new Portugal report released yesterday with lots of well-known people, like @filipa_pato @williamwouters @celsopereiradouro @michaeldemellopt @herdadedorocim @quinta_soalheiro @quintadomontedoiro and more.
It's going to be a strange month. Surgery coming. Clear the decks. Check! Spit out tasting notes. Check! Drink a little more. Workin' for the weekend! Stay tuned.

So, this is a bottle of Avesso from one of the best producers for it. In monovarietals, Vinho Verde boasts Alvarinho at the top, I think, although if you want to make a case for Loureiro, well, I love it too. Can Avesso compete?
Certainly, producers are treating it as the next big thing. There have always been some, but the question seems more like who isn't making one now. I have mixed feelings. The best of them, I've rather liked. Especially when they have a fine core of acidity. Those have certainly been well reviewed. Often, though, they seem to lack the personality of Alvarinho and Loureiro, boring by comparison.
What's the future? I'd like to see some with 10+ years of age. I haven't seen that yet. #wine #vinhoverde #winesofportugal #avesso #wineadvocate

One of the happier parts of my job is having some well known wine personalities come through town to show off interesting new offerings (here, their Solera sparkler). This is William Wouters and Filipa Pato of the Pato winery in Bairrada, Portugal. You should know them (and the region, with its signature red grape, Baga). Nice people, fine wines. The sparkler, alas, is sold out. #wine #winesofportugal #bairrada

This 2015 Special Harvest was once called the priciest wine in Vinho Verde ($45 per half). It's a dessert Loureiro with 84 grams of residual sugar. Like most, it is low alcohol (12%).This is perfectly fresh, but a little less intense than on release. It was never a Big Boy dessert wine, always a bit restrained as the acidity balances the sugar well. It's delicious and bright. I'm not sure it justifies the hype, esp. now, but it's a pleasure to drink. 640 bottles. #wine #winesofportugal #loureiro

Caves Transmontanas, informally known as Vértice, is best known for their fine Douro sparklers. This 2007 Gouveio (a.k.a. Godello) is a super Reserva on the lees about eight years. (There have been multiple disgorgements, this in 2015.) It remains powerful and deep. There is some oxidation now, but it is mouthwateringly good. On release,a mere $28. In 2022, btw, Symington acquired a stake in this company, but this 2007 long predates that. #wine #winesofportugal #espumante

The last Vintage under Lima & Smith before this quinta was sold to Sogevinus. I loved it on release, and it is still pretty gorgeous with a long life ahead. Yes, it is a monovarietal Alicante from Douro. It wasn't expensive either ($35). If they make 'em this good at this price, expect to see more monovarietal Alicante in Douro!
#wine #winesofportugal #alicantebouschet #douro -
Ok, I'll bet this is something new for most. Antonio Maçanita partnering with Nuno Faria is making non-fortifieds from Madeira! Previously, he went off to Pico in the Azores. This distant outpost of Fitapreta is really separate and Fitapreta is only in very tiny print on the back, no doubt a legal formality. Listrão is Palomino Fino and Caracol is likely related, so I'm told. Both white and very nice. About $70 in the USA each. That's no doubt related to the very small production (2,800 and 1,200 bottles). #Wine #Winesofportugal #madeirense

Drinking again. Portuguese stuff! With @matt_explores_wine and @wineparedes, including a gorgeous Passarella Fugitivo Centenárias 2016 (in a great place), a super 2015 Mouchão Licoroso, a Pellada Gold Label Alfrocheiro 2011 on the brink of too old and a somewhat oxidized Guru 2010. Win some, lose some. More comments to come on those I liked best, and others can initiate their own. Portugal has so many choices, such diversity!
I had the best shirt.

Pintas is always a favorite, also a field blend and always deeper and more concentrated. That's terroir. In '21, the extra depth is important here, adding some mid-palate and making it seem like...Pintas. Plus balanced power. Both beautiful, great off-vintage performances. Edge to Pintas. I'm a sucker for Pintas, as fine as Manoella is. Say 96 Pintas points if I were scoring, maybe more;a surprisingly fine competitor to the 2019. We'll see how time works things out. #wine #winesofportugal
