2012 Xinomavro Hedgehog Vineyard from Alpha Estate in Northern Greece.

Reasonably priced, in the $20s, it still has aged beautifully, because it is Xinomavro. 😊 In perfect shape, it's ripe with good acidity, a juicy finish and a hint of funk. It's a good price point in Alpha's red lineup, a friendly style with some distinction. No rush, but this is a great time to dive in.

Deep, powerful and still laced with red fruits, this is lively, if relatively mature in fruit profile. The tannic pop is a bit surprising, but this is doing well. This 2013 Driopi Reserve is all Agiorgitiko, the signature grape of Nemea. Are they worth aging? This is, but which style are you talking about? This is big and deep, not exactly your Gamay-style imitator. From a fine producer, it coats the palate with red fruits nuanced by age and wood, then adds a backbone. The silky Foundi 2011 was so elegant, but also bright, powerful and pure, with a big finish. There was also a great 2013 Vinsanto from Santo Wines. For once, no Portuguese wines. I loved this the first time I saw it. It is doing beautifully, developing gracefully and slowly. There's a hint of tartness on opening that cuts the fruity demeanor. It has good concentration, precision, elegance and focus. It's also delicious. The Greek Pinot Noir? I dunno, there are many style variations. But I did try the Riedel Pinot Extreme glass with it this time, which worked great. About $50 as a suggested retail, probably less on the street. #winesofgreece #agiorgitiko #Wine

This 2016 blend opens a little creamy, but Xinomavro soon asserts itself. This is better balanced now than on release. It has improved. The acidity cuts through fruit, the Syrah adds a little earthiness and this works great. I normally think Xinomavro is more of a Barbaresco substitute, but this has a very Burgundian feel. The 2018 XinomavRaw ($30) is from Oenops, aged in amphorae and sort of a natural wine concept. (So, the "raw.") This is a perfect food pairing, elegant, structured and fruity, but always supported by structure. Xinomavro means "sour black" or "acid black," and this tense red shows you why. There is tannic pop too. This has a long way to go and it takes over the palate. You could do a lot worse and spend a lot more. #wine #winesofgreece #xinomavro

This bottling has been a typical favorite. This bottle shows serious reductive notes, struck match, flint, etc. It also shows you what a quandary this type of presentation can create. On the first day open, this was pretty much undrinkable. The next day saw about 80% of it blow off. Now I could focus on the acidity, the crispness and the fruit. The red label ($217) is a solera that contains some of the 2019 Megas Oenos juice ($43). This is at a point where they have more similarity these days than they used to in new releases. The older soleras were more complex and earthier. This one is pretty young. I still say Labyrinth is the better wine, but given the increasing price differential, it sure isn't the better deal.

From Santo Wines, this is in perfect shape and modestly improved. You always wonder how the basic Assyrtiko will age. ($19 on release, although that has escalated.) This isn't even close to being done. Of course there was that bright green cork.

This 2012 Areti white, all Assyrtiko from Biblia Chora, has in most respects held brilliantly. Certainly, better than I thought it could. But that reductive nuance that I originally noted is even worse. Well, you could try pouring off a little, recorking it and drinking it the next day. The aeration will help. But it is always a dilemma as to how to rate a flawed wine that has so many good things going on.

This Xinomavro, arguably the best red grape in Greece and certainly my favorite, is a little different in this bottling from Vaeni Naoussa. At age 15+, it's in perfect shape and impressive. It has that earthy acidity you'd expect from maturing Nebbiolo, a comparison I like to make. Now, this bottling gets six months of heavy burn oak, which stands out when it is young and makes it a bit different. It has aged brilliantly, though, and pulled it in.
