okay i'm lookin' for real hardware to run Citadel-86 on
lets use some of my expansive collection of test equipment to see how much power this Pentium 266 MMX laptop burns at the wall
i managed to spike it to 30W loading a half life level
tuning up power management i got it to idle at ~17W

oh yeah we can play blood properly now
...except the OPL3-SAx glitches out after a while in blood and only blood WHYYYYYYY i though they were supposed to be good for this

found my pcmcia/cardbus stash, some of them even work
that BWP 712 is the good atheros shit that had the low level linux drivers that let you do all kind of wifi crimes
used it with XP a lot too on my late-2000's Pentium III 1.3ghz busted keyboard toshiba laptop cyberdeck
there's Win98 drivers that claim to do WPA2 which is hard to come by there, but i had no luck getting it to connect to anything
apparently it was off by default but after toggling "USB function" in the BIOS setup we have USB!
this laptop is a fully functional ode to the final days of DOS gaming and demoscene, and early Win9x pre-3dfx era gaming 🫡
(except for the dead panel and dead battery back RIP)

Well, after a day of fighting uphill both ways in the snow, we have 98SE working, with real graphics, and dialup networking!
No sound yet, and that's been a disaster, but it's something. Next: Sound, then games.

Bad news: this machine doesn't support booting off USB.
Bad news, supplemental: can't find my USB floppy drive. It's probably in a box somewhere.
Good news, surprising: found a NIB 56k serial modem in a different box, and CD-Rs can still (apparently) be bought locally, so... Winning?

Update: Windows 98 SE Service Pack 3.2 (2022)
Für das Windows 98 SE Service Pack 3 gibt es ein kleines Update auf Version 3.2.
Nach über einem Jahr erscheint damit (endlich) wieder eine neue Version. Es wurden einige Fehler behoben und Verbesserungen implementiert.

I use this floppy as #decor :)
It's also fun to play around with as well. There's no shutdown command, you just press the power button on the computer when you're done using it. Cool! #retroComputing

Sto ancora installando roba sul mio retro-padellone #thinkpad #i1200 : ha solo 64Mb di RAM e viaggia decisamente bene con #Windows98SE .
Con gli occhi di oggi o questo è un miracolo, oppure i più recenti #Windows sono pieni di fuffa e funzioni non richieste che ingolfano il computer e basta.

Hello #Fediverse, here's your "daily" OS-tan art!
This one is of Windows 98 SE-tan!Secchan has an appearance of a middle school girl in a turquoise sailor uniform and a yellow bow, and has short, periwinkle hair that is tied to the side, In the early days, her design was a boxy figure akin to Vulcan from the anime "Zatch Bell", known as "Konjiki no Gash" (金色のガッシュ!!) in Japan. However the current design eventually became official, despite the Vulcan box figure still being used as either a toy, or something she can go inside of to either hide, or control with.
Secchan is also shy, but unlike Hacchan (Windows 98) she is more easily angered. She is a fan of professional wrestling, thanks to Hassan's (male version of Hacchan) experience as a wrestler. She likes to say "Mau mau" (まうまう).
