Currently in the progress of creating my own bootleg version of Windows 3.1. Its gonna be based off Windows 97.

It even has the windows 9x style mini windows 3.1 installer, but this time it uses InnoSetup.

Small #retrocomputing bugbear/nitpick/PSA:

#Windows 3.11 was not otherwise known as "Windows for workgroups". The product was named "Windows for workgroups 3.11", the reason being that there's also a regular ass Windows 3.11!

There's also Windows for workgroups 3.1! It was just super buggy, especially for networking which was a bit of an issue. So there were free upgrades to 3.11

Also, you could buy an upgrade for 3.1 to "for workgroups".

All information I could find online suggests that running Wabi on #solaris 8 should be impossible.

The Oracle docs suggest that, there are newsgroup posts about people saying it doesn't work, or that complex workarounds are required.

But it all... just seems to work? Very odd!

You'd be surprised how aggressively these old educational games are protected by their rights holders. I had to buy a physical copy. Weird for something that came out in 1995. Surely they aren't still making money on this Windows 3.1 game, right?

Awesome! Got everything working correctly under Windows 3.1. Turns out the S3 driver set I got was the correct one after all and I got glorious 1024x768 with 32k colors mode working! 🎉

It actually ran way smoother than I expected especially compared to the generic SVGA driver, though I eventually had to drop back down to 640x480 @ 256 colors for Myst.

After some trial and error I was able to get AWE64 sound working also, though I had to fool S64basic.exe installer that I already had a controller manager installed. Blasted canyon.mid with the creative soft synth before I tried installing Roland MPU-401 support - which my PCMidi card to my surprise was completely happy to be driven by, so I followed it up with the SC-55 MkII ^^

I find it exceedingly cool how the Win 3.1 midi mapper allows you to divide midi channels between different midi devices if you so desire. So you could have drums from one and the rest from another for example.

To top it all off we installed Quicktime 2.03 😂 and did our first foray into Myst, the goal of the whole exercise to explore its various mysteries 💕 Will be returning to it a little later!

Installed Windows 3.1 on my 486 last night ^^ Dedication to the whole playing retro games in real retro gear! I’m getting Myst installed for my first playthrough and was surprised to find it’s a requirement.

Turns out drivers for video and audio are quite the tricky ones when you need SVGA support on a VESA card and audio from a SB Awe64. Both are required to play the game properly.

I’ll need to find working drivers for my S3 Trio64v2/DX card as well as something that is actually willing to install wave support for the Awe64.

I was able to get MIDI playback working so I can bop it to CANYON.MID like it's 1993.

Last night I never could get MIDI playback working in UTM/QEMU in Windows 3.11. If MIDI playback in Windows 3x is important to you, maybe try DOSBox or DOSBox-X instead.

Got Windows 3.11 running in #UTM on my M1 Mac. Sound (WAV playback) is working too after installing the SoundBlaster driver, but I can't seem to get it to play MIDI at all.

I first had to install MS-DOS of course. For that I followed this tutorial specifically written for UTM:

By now it's probably mostly forgotten fact, but if you're in for some 16-color 32x32 .ICO nostalgia, the Moricons.dll is still available even in Windows 10 (not sure about 11). Look for it at %SystemRoot%\System32\moricons.dll.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 was also something I wasn't going to get. I don't think my network card has drivers for DOS/Windows and I don't really want to mess around with that. Most of the copies I have seen were also the OEM version with just the user guide and the floppies.

But I have heard that it runs better than Windows 3.11 so that made me a little curious.

Then I saw a boxed copy and was really tempted. Then I saw a second boxed copy and figured why not.
