Starting my last tour as a military musician today before I make the switch to being a music officer and focusing on conducting. A shortish one, nine days on the road near Toronto. Bittersweet. It’s been a while since I did a 20-hour day but damn it was a good one. Did the Formation #5k followed by an hour of #windband sightreading, then a rip to the ferry to Vancouver, a visit with my aunt, dinner with her and my son, and then 3 sets of #yachtrock downtown before a brief repose, breakfast with my son, and now back on the ferry home. #running #bass #doublebass #windensemble

Just did a fun arrangement of some music for brass quintet and woodwind quintet for funsies, now going to turn my attention to this big band thing I’ve been meaning to do.

Wanted to share this performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade arranged for wind band, from the soundtrack to Hibike Euphonium. Scheherezade is one of my favorite pieces, and this recording is fantastic. I think the arrangement does a great job of capturing the texture of the piece, which I feel is really important in adapting orchestral music for wind band. :mmikusing:

I’m sure it has as much to do with the consistency of practice and the diligence and the slow and steady nature of improvement, but I’m gonna post my win for the day. I’m actually feeling comfortable on #doublebass tuned in 5ths. The intervals, the layout of the fingerboard, it’s all clicking.

Happy to be going on the road to field-test it in real-life applications from #concert halls and school cafeterias playing #windensemble music, to hotel ballrooms and #jazz clubs over the next month.
