Starting my last tour as a military musician today before I make the switch to being a music officer and focusing on conducting. A shortish one, nine days on the road near Toronto. Bittersweet. "Sleigh Ride" is a #light orchestra #standard composed by #LeroyAnderson. He formed the idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1946, and finished it in February 1948. Its first performance was by the #BostonPopsOrchestra, with #ArthurFiedler conducting, on May 4, 1948. Anderson also made additional parts and arrangements for #windBand and piano.

It’s been a while since I did a 20-hour day but damn it was a good one. Did the Formation #5k followed by an hour of #windband sightreading, then a rip to the ferry to Vancouver, a visit with my aunt, dinner with her and my son, and then 3 sets of #yachtrock downtown before a brief repose, breakfast with my son, and now back on the ferry home. #running #bass #doublebass #windensemble

Oof. My brain is mush after playing six hours of #windband music today, but at least my hearing is in reasonable stead. My IEM rig worked well and hearing myself better (while not overplaying) made a massive difference. #bassist #doublebass #stringbass #bassplayer

The 3DMEs are nice because I can dial in how much (or little) ambient sound I hear, so I can get a little more of the top end of my arco playing in Band situations, while still getting good fundamental via the DI. This looks quite promising for the future. #bassist #doublebass #hearingprotection #militaryband #windband #stringbass #bassguitar 3/3

I’ve not had this productive a day in the practice room in a long time. I got the nod to play the 2nd Bassoon part in Gounod’s Petite Symphonie on double bass and it’s at once kicking my ass and validating. Nothing like reading and playing up the octave, and in tenor clef no less. #doublebass #chambermusic #windband #militaryband

I've been using Pandora again for the first time in like a decade – David Gillingham is represented very strongly in my #windband station. Pandora is how I got into him back in high school, but it also makes me feel like Pandora doesn't have enough other concert band recordings licensed.

Richard Strauss -- Königsmarsch

Strauss wrote this march in 1906 and conducted its first performance the following year at a palace concert in Berlin for Wilhelm II.
This performance took place in the Italian city of Toblach, which lies near the border with Austria; the performers are wearing Tracht because as well being citizens of Italy, they also belong to the South Tyrolean, Tyrolean, and the larger German speaking worlds.
I listen to a little more wind band music than I used to on account of my children's participation in school wind bands. This piece appeals to me because Richard Strauss brings a richness and touch of lyricism to a genre that can all too often be just bombastic.
