Tja, da wollte Microsoft wohl im Jahre 1994 schon ein Bisschen sparen und hat ihr Programmpaket "Works für Windows" einfach mal auf nur noch 4 HD-Disketten veröffentlicht. Jeweils zwei Datenträger wurden zu einem zusammengefasst. Im Jahre 2026 macht das - wie ich finde - aber dafür noch ein nettes Sammlerstück!

Bin immer noch am Basteln mit meinem virtuellen EGA-System. Inzwischen sieht es schon deutlich besser aus:

- DOS-Shell im EGA-Grafikmodus
- Windows 3.11 läuft jetzt perfekt
- Datei-Manager mit Y2K-Update
- Entertainment Pack installiert

Das Ganze funktioniert jetzt auch einwandfrei mit nur 2MB Arbeitsspeicher und es sind dann immernoch 735KB RAM frei. So langsam kann man mit dem System auch arbeiten!

When I was working in the #Win311 world, I was tasked to create a tool for CSRs to use. I created this AWESOME monstrosity of an interface and dropped it on an entire department.

One of the CSRs looked at me with WTF in his eyes and asked:

“Why are you giving us a Death Star view? We're X-Wing Fighter Pilots. All we care about is that exhaust port at the end of the trench."

That stuck with me to this day.

Speziell für die verrückten Sammler, die das tatsächlich interessiert: Ich hab den 32 Jahre alten Diskettensatz von Microsoft Excel 5.0 für Windows 3.1 nochmal komplett neu hochgeladen.

Es gibt jetzt viel schönere Disk Labels ohne Vergilbung und diesmal hab ich für euch alles gleich in 600dpi gescannt. Außerdem hatte sich auf das erste Disk Image der Vollversion auch noch ein kleiner Fehler eingeschlichen, welcher nun ebenfalls korrigiert wurde.

Vor ein paar Tagen hatte ich auf eBay eine gut erhaltene große Schachtel mit Microsoft Word 6.0 für nur 10 Euro inkl. Versandkosten ersteigert. Mit dickem Handbuch, vielen Zusatzmaterialen und sämtlichen Disketten. Optisch alles in einem nahezu perfekten Zustand, v.a. die Disketten. Der Händler hatte das Paket allerdings deutlich gekennzeichnet als "DEFEKT" verkauft, weil er meinte, die Installation sei bei ihm im Emulator leider abgebrochen.

Heute wurde das Paket nun schließlich geliefert. Groß und schwer. Und bei mir ließen sich nun sämtliche 11 x 1.44MB HD-Datenträger sauber per KryoFlux auslesen ohne auch nur einen defekten Sektor. Die Installation unter Windows 3.1 hat dann auch - erwartungsgemäß - perfekt funktioniert. Seltsam aber "hurrah"!

Ja, ich weiß. Es ist nur ein doofes Textverarbeitsprogramm aus den 90ern. Trotzdem ist es schön, davon gute KryoFlux Streams zu haben. 😉

Da ist mir heute mal ein richtig schöner Diskettensatz von Excel 4.0 für Windows 3.x über den Weg gelaufen. Diese Version von Excel hatte ich bisher nur als Teil von Office 3.0, jedoch noch nie als Stand-Alone Fassung.

Ich konnte die Datenträger gerade schon kurz testen und erfolgreich in 86Box installieren. Die fertigen Images lade ich dann im Laufe der kommenden Tage auch wieder ins Internet Archive. 😉

Hab gerade im Internet Archive eine deutsche Vollversion von Windows, Version 3.11 gefunden. Also "3.11", nicht "Windows for Workgroups". Ist eigentlich fast Windows 3.1, nur mit ein paar Updates. Das Ganze passt auf nur 6 x 1.44MB 3,5Zoll Disketten. Als Retro-Sammler finde ich das tatsächlich cool!

Nach längerer Recherche konnte ich heute endlich meine Diskettenfassung von Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0 upgraden. Zu den IMG Disk Images kommen nun auch schöne Scans in 300dpi, sowie ein kompletter Satz an KryoFlux Streams.

Microsoft Works for Windows, v3.0b from late 1994, was the very last version of Works designed to run on Windows 3.1 before Windows 95 showed up and changed everything. And, up until today, I was never able to find a working, German language set of floppy disks for it. Oh, well. I just found it, installed it successfully... and it's glorious! Yes, I know I am a little weird. Have a nice day! 😜

Hab letztens eine wirklich schöne Sammlung von Microsoft OEM-Software auf CD-ROM gefunden. Mit den deutschen Vollversionen vom Flugsimulator 5, Works für Windows, Golf, Publisher, sowie Microsoft Money. Das Ganze stammt aus dem Jahr 1995 und läuft noch unter MS-DOS bzw. Windows 3.1/3.11. Fand ich eine nützliche Ergänzung der Diskettenarchive!

Es überrascht mich immer wieder, was man so alles noch spät Nachts im Netz findet, was man bisher doch noch gar nicht im Blick hatte!

Im Jahre 2023 wurden sämtliche ältere Versionen von SpeedCommander komplett als Freeware veröffentlicht, inkl. der 16-Bit Versionen 1,2 und III+ für Windows 3.1. Ich war jetzt nie der größte Fan dieses Datei-Managers, aber ich beschwere mich nicht über offiziell kostenlose Retro-Software.

Vor ein paar Jahren, also so um 1993/94 herum, wurde ich durch einen spontanen Taschengeld-Kauf stolzer Besitzer einer Windows 3.1-GUI-Erweiterung namens "Doors!". Das Ganze war zu seiner Zeit ein Titel der "Goldenen Serie" von Data Becker. Und... das fand ich damals ganz besonders cool: Die Software kam auf einer einzelnen, schön weißen DD-Diskette!

Leider wurde diese weiße Diskette über die Jahre dann zu einer ...sagen wir... "nicht mehr so schön weißen" Diskette. Das fand ich sehr schade und so war ich vor ein paar Tagen tatsächlich doch sehr erfreut, als ich auf eBay eine noch völlig original verschweißte Fassung von "Doors!" gefunden hatte. In Folie und unter Lichtausschluss würde sich doch bestimmt noch die schöne, weiße Diskette erhalten haben! Ganz bestimmt!

Naja, Pustekuchen! - Es stellte sich heraus: Frühe Seriennummern dieser Diskette waren blau. BLAU! Verdammt! Wohl ein Musterbeispiel für ein "First world problem".

Okay, manchmal hat man auch mal Glück. Ich hatte vor Jahren meine Version der Data Becker "Goldene Serie" Fassung von "Doors!" verschnipselt um sie digital einzuscannen. "Doors!" war mal eine alte OS-Erweiterung für Windows 3.1. Hatte danach jahrelang nach einem Ersatz gesucht, aber nie was Vernünftiges gefunden.

Jetzt hat gestern plötzlich jemand einen ganzen Haufen dieser kleinen Bücher fast schon kostenlos auf eBay eingestellt. 4,00 EUR inkl. Versand?! Und alle noch original verschweißt. Musste natürlich sofort zuschlagen! Also, nicht nur Doors!, aber eben auch. ^^

There are countless versions of TETRIS out there, but I believe one of the most beautiful versions out there, is the 1992 PC release of "TETRIS Classic" from Spectrum HoloByte. Here's the version for Windows 3.1:

The Siemens-Nixdorf #PCD4NL arrived today. After a medium long evening here is the result. First try was looking for the defective floppy - belt broken. Afterwards directly to an image and this to a SD card with adapter for 2,5" IDE.
#GeoWorks and #Win311 starting like rockets, the small 486 is more than powerful enough for it. More detailled pics in better quality will follow. Enough for today.

It turns out that the combination of:
- OS/2 2.1 Special Edition for Windows
- Windows for Workgroups 3.11
does indeed work; you just need to search for "os2 win311.zip" and install a patch from IBM dated 1994. And wow the performance tanks hard on the 386 machine when a Win-OS/2 seasion is running.
