CW: Win11 trying to lock us in, Linux, dual boot, resisting
Just watched a video on how Windows 11 can interfere with dual-boot setups in different ways, with the larger, overarching insight that Windows is doing its best to lock us in.
I feel that, as with climate change, we are at this crossroads but here with our privacy rights. The big companies want us to let go of our privacy and lock ourselves within their systems so we can be spied on in the best way, to feed us as much ads as possible and make us dependent on them (e.g. with "genAI"). Governments support this because they can use it to make us more compliant, control the information we receive and send, and easily target any "rebels".
I'm really grateful to all the people who support open source and alternative systems like Linux. But I worry that in a few decades, most of the Linux - aware people will be gone, or simply unable to work on open-source on their free time because of all the exploitation... I hope "normal people" are waking up about this and installing Linux before it's too late!
I'm personally trying to resist with the following actions:
- I have installed #ZorinOS, as dual-boot for now, on 3 computers + supported my partner with their install!
- I am asking my IT at work to install #Ubuntu (also dual-boot) on the new computers we are getting. They didn't want to install Zorin for unclear reasons, and seem to be struggling with the dual-boot installation. All of the staff is pushed towards using Windows and other MS products, including Copilot, yes, in a university!
- I am exposing my students to Linux and open source software (e.g. Python, Zotero), telling them not to use AI etc. But I am just a postdoc..
- I'm trying to figure out how we can promote Linux some more, but it's hard without the support of IT.
- are you also doing something about this (helping the world leave Windows' claws, if yes, what)?

Interested in moving from #Windows to #Linux but not sure where to start?
This is going to be a 'live-thread' of me trying to install a windows-like distribution of Linux, "ZorinOS", on my 4-years old #Lenovo Windows10 laptop. I will install it as a dual-boot so that I can still access Win if needed.
It's probably not going to go too smoothly but I'll edit this first post when the thread is done!Edit: Several hours later, mostly due to setting things up in Windows prior to the install: it works! (for now ) 🥳
If you read this (messy) thread and have any questions, comments, or advice, please don't hesitate! I will try to make it more streamlined later, especially the Windows part...

Updated our Lenovo Ideapad 530S from Windows 10 to #Fedora. I must say I am impressed, all the important things worked out of the box right after installation (hw accelerated graphics, sound, wifi).
This is Fedora Atomic with a #KDE desktop, very polished. The integration with podman is also very useful, you can keep different toolbox containers for different purposes around without cluttering your OS (https://xkcd.com/1987/ anyone?).

Good article in consumentenbond about upgrading your windows system to linux. One tip, you can always boot linux from usb to check if everything works.

@jalefkowit Put my last Windows OS to sleep, permanently and am feeling pretty chuffed with myself, If I do say.
Turns out they were able to convince me I didn't need that extra year of support after all, didn't even make 2 months.
Also consistently failed at reboot, sleep and power cycles usually in very close proximity to update forcing it.

Nutzt Ihr die Funktion von #LinuxMint, dass Updates automatisch installiert werden und nicht manuell angestoßen werden müssen?
Gerade bei den Rechnern meiner Eltern wäre es gut, wenn die sich um möglichst wenig kümmern müssten 🤔
Einerseits könnte man ohne Automatismus bei fehlerhaften Updates erstmal mit der Installation abwarten. Andererseits - wer recherchiert schon bei jedem Update, ob Probleme bekannt sind? 🤔

So, heute begonnen, das betagte HP ProBook meiner Mutter auf #LinuxMint umzustellen wegen #win10eol.
Für den Moment soll Win10 noch drauf bleiben aber auf einer kleineren Partition. Also erstmal mit GParted die Partition verkleinern. Drückt mir die Daumen, dass ich da nichts zerschossen habe.
Wenn doch: 🤷♂️
Dann wird halt komplett platt gemacht 😬

OK. Takže po migraci dat z NB s W10 na NB s W11 mě česká instalace linuxu místo těch W10.
Jenže kterou distribuci? Chci něco s Plasmou 6 a delší podporou ať nemusím řešit upgrade každý půlrok. Takže tentokrát ne Kubuntu - LTS má Plasmu 5 a 25.10. je až moc experimentální.
Takže po krátkém hledání jsem stáhnul #openSUSE Leap 16.
Bude fungovat? Splní očekávání? Zjistíme v následujících dnech 😎

I tap the keyboard, computer wakes up, UpTime is from whenever last I updated the kernel or whenever weather says "FUCK YOU" and my power goes down for over 10min (my UPS battery limit for the desktop).
I click on the software I want to use, it's there, IT WORKS, and I sip my coffee, do things I need, end of story.
In the words of BeOS peeps, "it's dark inside the box¨. If it works, it works.

It's K3WL that some folks want to install a whole new graphic interface or even a full implementation of UserLand server-client to make things look cool for them, but I got shit to do, and I am fed up with techie tap dancing after 3 decades.
You don't NEED any of that, really.

Main reason why I live in Mint is, it's amply supported, updated, flexible.... SIMPLE AF, you can tweak it to whatever degree of poindexterisms you want, but the standard, out-of-box runs well, with minimal bloat, and reasonable flexibility/privacy/ease/etc

I've been on Mint since. Near zero complaints.
Ok, in 2021(?) they release Mint 19.0 which had broken USB modules. Life sucked for about 2weeks until we figured out what was wrong. They tried fixing it, almost fixed it all, with couple updates to 19.3 but in the next 6months or so (?) Mint 20.x came out, and we all agreed to never talk about Mint 19 again. I actually microwaved a DVD with Mint19 installation files.
That is how you can tell I was miffed off.

The next decade or so I swayed between that and Debian, got disgusted went onto BeOS (not Linux), a few BSD (defs not Linux), a plethora of obscure AltOSes, and then - because most AltOSes were wiped by monopolistic market warfare - I came back to Linux as main daily driver, around, oh, 2011-2012.
Windows7 was the last time Windows was a feasible operating system.
I got to Ubuntu, Gentoo, then other exotics. ended up with Mint in 2013.

Funny story.
My very first flavor of Linux was Slackware., circa, uh, 93-94?
It sucked.
Then, after dabbling in OS/2, neXT and other stuff, I discovered RedHat, 95ish? 96?, and Debian 94-95ish?, the convenience of a .RPM or .DEB package for software installation, bypassing the pain of compiling everything. Wheeee!!!!

For one thing, they choose to suffer. I understand their company issued whatever computer has Windows, checkmark. Doing that for their personal stuff is downright fucking stupid, and I point that out, often and delightfully.

Dunno, freedom of not being surveilled and sold ads and having your shit snooped and fed to some data center?

Anyone running #Canva on #Linux? I got it installed and running using #wine (wine-wow64), at least to the login screen. And it properly opened a browser tab for login.
Not sure if it is usable and stable. But as the app seems to "display" the website anyway ( looks like electron), it might work.
If this works, I can migrate one user from Win10 to Linux! Yeah!

I’ve had to talk to my dad about Windows 10 EoL and he is not happy.
‘I bought this fucking computer to see out my days’ he says. He’s 77 and in pretty good health for a stroke survivor. He bought the laptop 10 years ago. I’ve kept it going with a RAM and SSD upgrade last year.We’re getting him a new laptop soon. He’s pissed off that it doesn’t have an internal CD writer, (I know) but we’re getting him an external one.
