#WimbledonPark at threat from development, despite being #MetropolitanOpenLand and protected by covenants signed in 1993 by Merton and #AELTC, who’re are the ones that now plan to build on it, because “times have changed” !

See this map savewimbledonpark.org/post/map https://www.savewimbledonpark.org/post/map-illustrating-aeltc-plans illustrating the #AELTC (Wimbledon Tennis) plans to build all over #WimbledonPark Metropolitan Open Land that they bought from #Merton Council in 1993 and promised not to build on and even signed covenants saying that they would not build on it. Their excuse to apply for planning permission to bulldoze and build all over it now ? “Times have changed”.

Little Egrets once hunted to extinction in Europe, now protected, are returning. The first one was seen at #WimbledonPark lake in 2019 and may breed. They can be seen perched up in old Crack Willow #trees that #AELTC plan to destroy. Help save the Little Egrets, Herons, #trees and all of the nature that lives in #WimbledonPark by signing the petition www.SaveWimbledonPark.org #rspb #BirdsOfTwitter

@SaveWimbledonPark Great to see that Merton Council acknowledge that #WimbledonPark including the golf course (all part of the same Metropolitan open land) is a “#conservation area”, “protected #heritage landscape” and that “the retention of existing #trees helps to protect against #climate change”!

The first 8cm of soil supports the majority of terrestrial life: https://twitter.com/savewimbldnpark/status/1609625650532319233?s=61&t=s5D6hOI0F7ZUs6HAlawdOw
Precisely why stripping between 1 metre to 9m of soil from almost the entire golf club lands of #WimbledonPark will do irreversible damage to #biodiversity and the #environment.

Yesterday I enjoyed a bracing walk around the perimeter of #WimbledonPark golf course enjoying the stunning scenery, trees and nature. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1--B7J1P1XHWn03cs8v1SvQ8jBUX2lJ54. You don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy the beautiful vistas and nature.
Let’s hope that AELTC don’t get permission to bulldoze and concert over this beautiful and protected green space. Sign the petition and see all the news at www.SaveWimbledonPark.org. -

The discussion about the All England Lawn Tennis Club’s expansion plans into #WimbledonPark Golf Club across the road are heating up in SW19. The #Wimbledon #community Forum meets 19.15 on 30 November at Wimbledon Library. The future of #WimbledonPark on is on the agenda. The Forum is convened on behalf of #Merton Council to engage local people in local issues. #AELTC were invited to discuss their planning application to build a massive industrial tennis comp’ex on this #MetropolitanOpenLand (ie #GreenBelt) but turned down the invitation. We’ll still be discussing it anyway #SaveWimbledonPark https://www.savewimbledonpark.org

#FriendsofWimbledonPark have today reminded #MertonCouncil officers of their promise to reseed the grass by the #WimbledonPark Road entrance, which was damaged by the #AELTC car parking and compounded by the funfair trucks for bonfire night.
We have also asked Merton to replace the tactile paving in the same area, which was also badly damaged by the trucks and is now moving around in the rain water, causing a trip hazard and impeding pushchairs, wheelchairs, mobility scooters etc. -
Join #FriendsofWimbledonPark for #WimbledonPark Volunteer Tree Planting On 25 And 26 November 2022 - for details and how to register, see www.friendsofwimbledonpark.org. Help enhance and protect this beautiful park and the #environment by planting more #trees.
