#Bumblebees are struggling in #UKHeatwaves - but you can help them
Justin Rowlatt, July 21, 2026
Excerpt: "Conservationists say the best way to help is by creating more flower-rich habitats, so bumblebees can find food even as the climate becomes more extreme.
"Dr Sarah Beynon is an insect expert whose west Wales farm is managed for wildlife as well as food. She has planted #meadows, #willows, #hedgerows, #TussockyGrasses and late-flowering crops to give insects food through the summer.
" 'When we came, this farm was a wildlife desert,' she says. 'In 10 years, it's become a nature reserve.'
"Her message is that people do not need acres of land to help. A pot of native wildflowers on a doorstep or windowsill can act as a small refuelling stop for insects moving through a human-dominated landscape.
" 'Your flowerpot is a service station,' she says. 'It's somewhere to rest, refuel and carry on.'
"Dr Richard Comont adds that putting in a pond [#BeeWateringStation] - however small - and shade can also help.
"#Flowers growing near water tend to produce nectar with more moisture in it, he says. Bumblebees cannot collect water in the way honeybees do, they get most of the liquid they need from nectar, so wetter nectar can help make colonies more resilient in hot weather.
Whilst planting dense #shrubs gives bumblebees places to escape the heat of the sun, and can allow them to move between flowers through cooler patches of air."Learn more:

La balade passe près d'un lieu préservé, où l'on a replanté des arbres menés en têtard pour leur intérêt écologique et patrimonial. De très vieux saules montrent leurs cavités et anfractuosités.

Another pick for this week's #JukeboxFridayNight theme, #FireSmokeAndHeat.
The Willows: Sit By The Fire (1964)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmEoDnRp6kcThis very enjoyable Drifters soundalike was issued on the short-lived Heidi record label. Distributed by Atlantic Records, Heidi was a showcase for the productions of Tom Dowd and Bert Keyes, and if my memory serves me right, it may have been owned by them as well.

Once-dying Mexican river delta slowly nursed back to life https://www.rfi.fr/en/international-news/20250408-once-dying-mexican-river-delta-slowly-nursed-back-to-life
"#conservationists secured land as well as #irrigation permits, cleared invasive shrubs and planted thousands of native #trees... After years of this type of work, we now have a #forest of #poplars and #willows on 260 hectares on a stretch of the #ColoradoRiver. Fauna has returned. Many #birds have returned. The rejuvenation has also brought back the #beaver—a species that had largely disappeared in the area"

Had a lovely #lunchtime walk with the @druid earlier on.
Nice to see that the #willows are starting to do their thing and adorning the trees with their sparkly bundles of fluffy marvelousness. They remind me of caterpillars with Mohicans.

#Writers, what's with the hate for willow trees? Why are they seen as evil and the harbingers of abject horror?
We had willows when I was growing up. I have only good memories of one in particular. It was massive and provided great relief from the hot Summer sun. It was also great for climbing, which as every kid knows is the reason that trees were invented in the first place.
I'm truly curious.
This may or may not be a spoiler for the book I just boosted.
