During the eighth inning with the score tied 2–2, Cleveland Indians batter Vic Wertz hit a deep fly ball to center field that was poised to score the runners on base. However, Mays made an over-the-shoulder catch while on the run to record the out, and his throw back to the infield prevented the runners from advancing. The Giants won the game 5–2 in extra innings, and eventually the World Series.

The #Giants open a 3 game series vs the #BlueJays at home tomorrow but the game is being "broadcast" on #ESPN+ so I won't be able to watch it, live or off of my DVR.
I don't mind not being able to see the game but I would have liked to see the ceremony eulogizing #WillieMays that is also apparently being held before the game.

I hesitate to say that the #Giants "beat" the #Cubs 4-5 yesterday but they "won" on #WillieMays tribute day to end a 5 game losing streak. 👏
The Giant's "won" on an walk off walk to Flores in the bottom of the 9th which was thrown after Ramos was walked intentionally to load the bases.
So, thanks & a tip of the hat to the Cubs for graciously ceding the "win" to the Giants who needed it.

The #Giants lost again, this time to the #Cards 5-6 at the #NegroLeague & #WillieMays tribute event at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, AL.
What did we learn from this 5th loss in 7 games?
1) The rookies Ramos (.307), Wisely (.296) & Bailey (.299) are the best hitters on the team. Ramos got a 3 run HR & Bailey was 4 for 5.
2) Giants pitching s*cks -- giving up 3 runs in the 1st, 2 runs in the 3rd & another run in the 5th to give the Cards the lead 3-6 going into the 6th.
3) The Giants hitters can hit, just not when it counts. 🤷♂️
The Giants got 11 hits (4 more than the 7 by the Cards) but left 8 runners on base and only scored 3 out of 8 RISP.
Worst case: The Giants scored 1 run in the top of the 6th with only 1 out to start the inning off but could only score 1 more run after the bases were loaded and there was still only 1 out. 🤦♂️
Same old story and it's the main reason why the Giants are currently 36-40 in 9th place (out of 12) in the Wildcard race. 🤷♂️

MLB will be honoring the Negro Leagues and the legendary Willie Mays with a televised game today at America's oldest ballpark, Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala. Both teams will be wearing Negro Leagues uniforms — the Cardinals will wear St. Louis Stars kits, while the Giants will wear San Francisco Sea Lions jerseys. On June 17, the day before he died, Mays gave a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle about the game. "My heart will be with all of you who are honoring the Negro League ballplayers, who should always be remembered, including all my teammates on the Black Barons," he said.
