4. I am not me, the horse is not mine by #WilliamKentridge.
Kentridge somehow made it onto our “Artists to Travel For” list, but I can’t remember why. This exhibition at Bozar offered ample answers.
All of the genres I’m exploring in my own art are evident: animation, performance, writing, puppetry, drawing, film, paper engineering. Incredible exhibition design that gives a sense of scope to his multidisciplinary work; moving from, say, a short story by Nikolai Gogol (“The Nose”) to an installation of film, animation, and shadow puppetry, to opera.
I was especially moved by a short film called “Sybil”, which takes Apollo’s prophetess as it’s starting point: “The project explores how the future can or cannot be known, our ‘waiting’ for answers, the algorithm as the contemporary equivalent of the Sybil, and our continued longing for a human Sibyl, despite the uncertainty of fate.”
