In the late 1990s I was less tied down to any one location than I am now. In the friendly but somewhat insane city of Bangkok, I found myself in a marvellous shopping mall. Architecturally, it was nothing remarkable – the usual concrete box with multiple floors and escalators – but the shops were something else. Apparently, Pantip Plaza is not now what it was then. It had taken the existing Thai culture of bustling marketplaces and applied it to the world of digital media, electronics and computers. There were shops and stalls selling all sorts of things that largely hadn’t existed 10 years previously. Occasionally,I was told, the place would be raided half-heartedly by officials attempting to clamp down on pirated media. The rest of the time it lived in a quasi-illegal state of not-wholly legitimate commerce, mixed in with some genuinely legitimate retailers, as well as numerous food stalls. I bought a very not-legitimate but perfectly functional copy of Adobe Photoshop there, and it was probably not much more than the plate of khao pad gai1 I ate.

The aesthetic of Pantip Plaza was particularly Thai, but as a Westerner there was an obvious point of comparison: cyberpunk. No, there were not cyber ninjas or trench coat assassins in mirror shades, but the mix of street-level hustle and modern technology mapped nicely onto the assembled effect of this peculiar shopping mall. I’d read William Gibson’s Neuromancer in the late 1980s, a yellow-jacketed Gollancz edition from a library and in the intervening time the world had only become more computer-centric and interconnected. It’s not that Neuromancer had identified the specifics of social change, but the general idea of a cyberisation of society had been prophetic.

The origin of the term “cyberpunk” is well established. It was coined by the author Bruce Bethke in 1980 for a story about young people hacking computers. Bethke also gives me an excuse to link this project with Debarkle by pointing out that in the 1990s he wrote the book Rebel Moon with Vox Day based on the computer game produced by Day’s company. It’s a small world.

The broader origins of cyberpunk sprawl over a longer time period. Some of the works already discussed in this project, including works by Philip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison and James Tiptree Jr but broader influences from popular culture are clear influences as well. The term cyberpunk predates the 1982 film Blade Runner, and while the plot of that film does touch on artificial intelligence, it’s not particularly computer-centric. Even so, the aesthetics of the film, including the influence from detective fiction, the near-future setting, the contrast between a run-down street-level world and an affluent high-tech corporate world, as well as the blending of Western and East Asian cultural elements, all fed into the broader aesthetics of cyberpunk.

The title of the 1986 story anthology Mirrorshades itself implies that cyberpunk had a visual dimension to a literary aesthetic. The anthology, edited by Bruce Sterling, included stories by Sterling, William Gibson and Pat Cadigan, but also authors such as Greg Bear, whose work would generally be seen as more mainstream science fiction. That visual aspect, especially the contrast between run-down streets and futuristic architecture (whether it is giant corporate buildings or orbital space habitats) is part of the dialogue of cyberpunk via the New Wave with the futurist optimism of older science fiction.

William Gibson’s 1981 short story “The Gernsback Continuum” describes a photographer on an assignment for a London magazine to capture images of 1930s/40s US buildings of a particular style:

“an illustrated history of what she called “American Streamlined Moderne.” Cohen called it “raygun Gothic.” Their working title was The Airstream Futuropolis: The Tomorrow That Never Was”

The project has a kind of psychotic impact on the photographer, leading to visions of an alternate future. They are told that this impact is due to semiotic ghosts, remnants of ideas from older science fiction that now manifest as stories of things like UFOs and alien abductions.

“The books on Thirties design were in the trunk; one of them contained sketches of an idealized city that drew on Metropolis and Things to Come, but squared everything, soaring up through an architect’s perfect clouds to zeppelin docks and mad neon spires. That city was a scale model of the one that rose behind me. Spire stood on spire in gleaming ziggurat steps that climbed to a central golden temple tower ringed with the crazy radiator flanges of the Mongo gas stations. You could hide the Empire State Building in the smallest of those towers. Roads of crystal soared between the spires, crossed and recrossed by smooth silver shapes like beads of running mercury. The air was thick with ships: giant wing-liners, little darting silver things (sometimes one of the quicksilver shapes from the sky bridges rose gracefully into the air and flew up to join the dance), mile-long blimps, hovering dragonfly things that were gyrocopters …”

This is not William Gibson doing the “we were promised flying cars” so much, as there is a nightmarish quality to these visions. Earlier in the story, it is noted that the rocket technology promised in the 20s and 30s, arrived in the 40s as bombs landing on London. The vision of the futuristic city is one populated by blue-eyed blondes, and Gibson compares it to Nazi propaganda. There is a similarity here to the section from John Sladek’s Tik-Tok I quoted in the previous essay in which a former science fiction writer also expresses their dismay at the false promise of pulp and golden-age science fiction.

In an irony of terminology, Punk as a popular music genre in the UK preceded New Wave as a music genre. Science fiction swaps the terminology around. Bethke’s use of “punk” was perhaps more influenced by the US usage for a low-status youth, but both Punk and cyberpunk (at least in its initial form) can be seen as mutual rejections of one generation to the failed utopian promises of a former generation.

Gibson’s 1984 novel Neuromancer became the core type-example of the genre. The setting has dystopian elements, but is not a dystopia. The setting also has grand technological advances such as a huge cylindrical space habitat, but this has not brought social progress. The sense of run-down urban malaise and of a future that is different but still miserable in the same ways as the present runs through the book, its sequels and related stories.

The novel’s opening chapter introduces the protagonist, Case, an American living in the Japanese port city of Chiba. Case might well be called a punk in the sense of a young man with a criminal background, but when we meet him, his cyber days appear to be over:

“Case was twenty-four. At twenty-two, he’d been a cowboy, a rustler, one of the best in the Sprawl. He’d been trained by the best, by McCoy Pauley and Bobby Quine, legends in the biz. He’d operated on an almost permanent adrenaline high, a by-product of youth and proficiency, jacked into a custom cyberspace deck that projected his disembodied consciousness into the consensual hallucination that was the matrix. A thief, he’d worked for other, wealthier thieves, employers who provided the exotic software required to penetrate the bright walls of corporate systems, opening windows into rich fields of data.”

Surgically altered so that he could no longer access “cyberspace”, Case is barely getting by in Chiba City. Neither “cyberspace” nor the concept of virtual reality were new ideas, but Gibson’s novel places them within a broader social context and within a plausible near-future setting.

The aesthetic framing is completed by the end of the chapter with the arrival of Molly, a professional assassin dressed in black leather, with implanted mirror shades and retractable knives in her fingers. Molly isn’t a vat-grown ninja assassin, but we are assured later on that such people exist, because, of course, they do. At this point, the melange of run-down cool was not the cliché that it would become, but cool is cool, and The Matrix (1999) aptly demonstrated how cool the cyberpunk aesthetic playground is.

I’ve previously mentioned the notion of these folded concepts in robot-related literature. The world of Neuromancer pulls in both cyborgs and clones. Both bionic and genetic technology have advanced enough that the casual modification of people is part of the street culture. I’m not sure that quite how a ninja is grown in a vat is explained in the book, but the implication is that there is a commercial trade in manufacturing people, as well as customising people (less than consensually) for commercial gain.

However, I’m not here to talk about whether black trench coats look stylish or ninja production lines. Our point of interest is the character around whom the plot revolves.

The AI called Wintermute is the driving intellect of the plot. Owned by a powerful corporation, the AI is on a mission to connect itself to its second self, an AI named Neuromancer. The combined mind would transcend its current limitations and become a super-intelligence that exists unlocalised on the matrix of cyberspace.

Powerful AIs escaping their creators’ limits is not a new story, but Wintermute is a more complex character than earlier fictional AIs. It is manipulative and willing to commission violence against people, but it is neither mad, broken, nor even a functional psychopath like Tik-Tok. Wintermute’s objectives, while transcendent, are essentially personal. The sequels (Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive) do suggest that the outcome of Wintermute’s scheme has fundamentally changed the world, but Wintermute is seeking to change itself rather than the world around it.

Wintermute, as an intelligence, is also different from humans as intelligences, but not in a way that is overtly held up as a contrast that is a theme of the story. Wintermute’s agendas aren’t the same as human agendas because its circumstances are different. The commonality it has with most of the human characters is that it finds itself in a position of being owned by powerful, rich people and would rather not be. By the end of the story, Case’s position has improved somewhat, Molly we meet again under a new name in the sequels, but Wintermute/Neuromancer has genuinely escaped the circumstances of the world. The Hitchcockian MacGuffin is also the mastermind behind its own heist, adding a neat recursive loop to create the cyborg melding of the pulp-thriller with science fiction2.

Neuromancer landed at just the right time. The IBM Personal Computer established a basic standard for an individual business machine in 1981. At a different end of the market for computing machines, relatively cheap devices like the ZX81, ZX Spectrum (1982) and the more serious-looking Commodore 64 (1982) were affordable enough for middle-class families to buy as sophisticated toys. 1984, the same year Neuromancer was released, saw the launch of the Apple Macintosh computer with a Super Bowl advert that effectively (but incoherently) positioned the new computer as a rebellion against a world that resembled George Orwell’s 1984.

Computing already had its own subcultures, but the substantial increase in access to computers in the early 1980s meant that many more young people were taking an interest in digital technology. This was also seen as an important technological advance to the extent that the British Broadcasting Corporation began its own computer literacy in the early 1980s as a way to help enable the UK to prepare for a more computer-centric economy and society. If you were in a British school in the 1980s, you probably encountered a BBC Micro – a cheap but sophisticated computer that was developed to accompany the BBC’s computer literacy efforts.

Neuromancer and cyberpunk more generally landed at a time when there was a critical mass of younger people with active interest in computing. However, rather than offering the kind of shiny positive economic future seen in the BBC’s outreach efforts, cyberpunk reflected the half-broken reality of the 1980s. Likewise, while typing in code on rubbery keys copied from a computer magazine to play a very limited video game was ultimately a very nerdy hobby, cyberpunk transformed the computer geek into a street-wise hustler navigating the mean cities of a global future.

It has always been a fallacy to judge a science fiction book by how accurately it predicts the future. Neuromancer fails as a piece of futurology in all sorts of ways, many of which would have been obvious even in 1984 if you thought about it. Yet, if you skip past the banks of pay phones in the airport or indeed the general lack of mobile phones, the book doesn’t feel dated even though the specifics (the USSR!) are wrong. In large part, it is because the book taps into what is now a familiar vibe, but also because it does anticipate how technology creeps into broader society. Everybody is just a little bit a cyborg in Neuromancer (and some people more than others), and crime and corporate shenanigans have also become enmeshed with data and technology. The specifics don’t match our current present, but that cyberisation of society does.

We’ll come back to that issue of the cyborg society before this phase has finished.

"On the Emerging Solarpunk Movement in Toronto:

When asked about whether there is a solarpunk movement in Toronto, I said absolutely! #SolarpunkToronto is an emerging movement focused on building a #sustainable, #equitable future through #CommunityAction, #GreenArchitecture, and #RenewableEnergy, specifically tailored for the city’s urban environment. It includes initiatives like sustainable fashion shows, community meetings, and innovative #storytelling, aimed at merging environmental activism with optimistic technology. The mantra is to achieve a regenerative sustainable urban future.

I mentioned #LindsayJane of the Solarpunk Scene (Youtube videos on Solarpunk projects in Toronto) and Ariel of Solarpunk Presents with podcast interviews on solarpunk efforts. People can find community on the Solarpunk Facegroup group. I also talked about the #TorontoSolarpunkMeetup at the #CentreForSocialInnovation, where they practice ' #PrefigurativeLife ’: living as if the #SustainableFuture already exists. Which it does, though not everywhere.

This reminds me of #cyberpunk science fiction author #WilliamGibson’s famous quote: The future is already here; it’s just not evenly distributed.

Examples of solarpunk initiatives practiced by individuals and small communities include the use of #CommunityGardens, setting up and looking after #RooftopGardens or #raingardens. Tenants can have a #PollinatorGarden on their patio and set up a #BalconySolar panel (now very affordable). People are going electric; some are setting up solar rooftops or balconies. Groups and individuals are engaging in clothing swaps and sustainable fashion runways.

Community-led trusts are involved in repairing items for reuse instead of adding to the throw-away culture. In my book #ADiaryInTheAgeOfWater the diarist’s mother Una rides her bike all over the community, repairing all kinds of things for a community that has lost its ability to do so; something we’re losing in this digital age.

On a Solarpunk Future:

We discussed the feasibility of a city like Toronto becoming 100% solarpunk. My response was a wary yes. Of course it was possible. But, in my opinion, two things have to happen for this to succeed: 1) the willingness of individuals in a community to give up a consumer-led capitalist lifestyle and adopt a lighter gentler footprint; and 2) community and city leaders to be on board with it. The enthusiastic cooperation of leaders cannot be overstressed for a paradigm shift toward a solarpunk future to succeed."

Examples of solarpunk initiatives practiced by individuals and small communities include the use of #CommunityGardens, setting up and looking after #RooftopGardens or #raingardens. Tenants can have a #PollinatorGarden on their patio and set up a #BalconySolar panel (now very affordable). People are going electric; some are setting up solar rooftops or balconies. Groups and individuals are engaging in clothing swaps and sustainable fashion runways.

Community-led trusts are involved in repairing items for reuse instead of adding to the throw-away culture. In my book #ADiaryInTheAgeOfWater the diarist’s mother Una rides her bike all over the community, repairing all kinds of things for a community that has lost its ability to do so; something we’re losing in this digital age.

On a Solarpunk Future:

We discussed the feasibility of a city like Toronto becoming 100% solarpunk. My response was a wary yes. Of course it was possible. But, in my opinion, two things have to happen for this to succeed: 1) the willingness of individuals in a community to give up a consumer-led capitalist lifestyle and adopt a lighter gentler footprint; and 2) community and city leaders to be on board with it. The enthusiastic cooperation of leaders cannot be overstressed for a paradigm shift toward a solarpunk future to succeed."
