I got a new camera and went away for the weekend. I was walking around because my mom suggested I take a picture of the sunset. As I was walking closer to get a better view, I heard something... It sounded like a rodent, and I knew there were groundhogs nearby, so I followed it. Turns out, it was a young porcupine! #CanonR7 with 24-105 f4, turned out to be more like 168mm with the cropped sensor, so that's still pretty close. #porcupine #photography #wildlifephotgraphy

A young Silver Garden Spider (Argiope argentata) most likely. When I shot this, the entire stabilimentum (the decorative part of the web) was smaller than a dime, about 12mm by 9mm. The spider's body is 3mm long, about the size of Roosevelt's nose on a dime. The body of an adult female would be around 12mm with long legs. #spider #macro #macrophotgraphy #arachnid #wildlifephotgraphy

I, along with a few dozen other people, were there to watch Flaco, the escaped/liberated Eurasian eagle owl, fly out tonight in Central Park. (The second picture is what I call his "angel wing" pose.) He relocated a few times to nearby trees, and eventually into the North Woods before heading towards the construction area.

Instead of going back to see the Eurasian eagle owl today, I went to Van Cortlandt Park. There was a lovely flyover by three Canada geese. I then walked up the old rail trail to Tibbetts Brook Park. On the way, I saw a great blue heron, and a mute swan in the park. On the way back, I saw a bear. Well, I think it's a bear; the rangers even ear-tagged it…

Two pictures of California condors from the San Diego Wild Park. The soaring one flew fairly low over me, in a slow flyby. The close up is of one of their captive breeding birds. They are huge birds with a 3 meter (10 foot) wingspan, and look majestic as they soar on the thermals.
The breeding program and environmental clean up have raised their population from 27 to 537 in 35 years.
