  1. Struggling to attract wildlife to your garden?

Acorus calamus, or sweet flag, might be the answer.

This perennial favorite thrives in wetland areas and boasts aromatic, sword-like leaves that not only create a vibrant atmosphere but also welcome beneficial creatures like frogs and dragonflies.

  2. *Wildlife garden update*

Frogs are now permanent residents of hour two mini ponds. Yesterday we also saw this very tiny frog (for reference, it was probably no bigger than 3 cm), which I try to capture on camera, but bear with the limits of my iPhone 12 mini.
We didn’t see tadpoles, so no idea where they came from, but it’s wonderful anyway.

  3. #InsectFriday Police Car Moth (named for a time and place when police cars were black and white!) Gnophaela vermiculata. Not super abundant, but not uncommon here and sometimes a number seen at once. This one was late July last year on Achillea/Yarrow in the yard or #garden (there are wild, cultivated and self sown hybrids around) #insects #inverts #NaturalGardening #pollinators #WildlifeGarden #Alberta #Canada

  4. CW: cool looking fly on plant

Hmm I could make this #InsectThursday or #InsectFriday or how about #FlyDay
Anyway, this cool customer was in the garden last #June so I guess #ThrowbackThursday works too 😉
Funny:posted it on iNaturalist, their system recognised right away that it was a photo of a Lonicera/Honeysuckle - the plant the fly is sitting on- from the close-cropped photo! Impressive, except it didn't notice the fly at all..

  6. [Edit: Fall 2022]
I have a stumpery next to my backyard pond which is part of a wide border I'm creating around my suburban property where I leave things as natural as I can.
This is where I'm dumping my wild rose branches, some leaves and my Hallowee'en pumpkin etc. This year I've also created a little brushpile in another corner.

  7. "Leave Leaves Alone" is a great finish to my season which began with "No Mow May".
I was left with just 8 bags of leaves for our city's compost, & the rest were mowed & left to decompose on the ground, excepting one wide strip that I left around 1 outside border.
I have to pick up some leaves because I have 3 large Maple trees whose leaves create a matted carpet, in addition to 2 crab apples & 1 horse chestnut.

  8. Today I had an early morning visitor. I think this Eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridans) was attracted by the clover I’ve planted all over the lawn. Also, my yard has lots of cover with a culvert in the front yard, and some brush piles, a large stumpery and other messy areas in the back which rabbits need in order to hide from predators.

  9. CW: Garden discussion | pond, water features

@Potteriesgardener This summer my husband and I dug a small backyard pond and I already have a few other wet spots for the wildlife (a flower pot near a downspout & a shallow basin on the ground), but I'd like to give the fish tank idea a try next Spring. I live in Montreal so we're moving into winter and it's the time for garden dreams. Thanks for the idea😃
