Echinacea purpurea, Gaura, Verbena hastata, Verbena bonariensis, ornamental grasses and wildflowers, such as poppies, mullein and several other self-sown individuals, before the draught bleached lawn give this border a meadow or prairie-like appearance.

In the midst of a Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Mariesii Lilacina’ grows a self-sown Achillea, maybe Yarrow, hard to know and very difficult to spot. Their flowers are absolutely identical in colour. Even their flower heads are similar in shape. Is this a case of perfect colour harmony or plant intelligence using colour as camouflage?

The blue flowering Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland' are doing particularly well this year, their flowers have already lasted a long time. I love the combination of the Salvia with the fluffy Stipa tenuissima ‘Ponytail'.

Previously, a small part of the garden by the side of the house was only grass, a tree, a few shrubs and hedging to the side and back - and it was a bit unloved.
Since the transformation, the distinction between inside and outdoors has been blurred. Sitting in the living room you can now not be quite certain where you are. The garden seems to be intent on coming into the house.

I love the garden at any time of the day. Without a doubt, though, the light is best early mornings and, as in this photograph, late afternoons.
As everywhere in the garden, the borders contain deliberately placed plants but welcome with open arms the many self-sown wildflowers.

We also have rabbits again. So far, relatively well behaved, sticking to the grass for culinary needs. Apart, that is, from one of the daylilies, which looks rather sorry for itself. And the primrose, which one of them ‘deadheaded’ whilst I was watching.

Catkins on a Salix gracilistyla Mount Aso. The catkins are produced in spring before the leaves.
I moved this shrub a couple of years ago from an area, where it was not doing well. It is meant to grow up to three metres tall but is still tiny, probably on account of its hard start in life.

We had a light snowfall during the night. She snow falls on already frozen ground, hence stays for a while. There is not a lot of snow but it is pretty and very seasonal.

Even on a grey and dull December's day, the garden looks beautiful. The grasses and dogwoods glow with autumnal or, rather, wintry colour and the seedheads provide texture.
We leave the old growth until next spring. It is so important for the wildlife. Birds and small mammals still find food from the seeds and berries. Insects overwinter in leaves and seedheads. The old growth also provides shelter for other small creatures over the winter.
Besides, if we cut down everything now, the garden would be bare, unsightly and boring for the next several months.
