#wikinews — Public Fediverse posts

Yesterday I learnt the cheerleader died #savethecheerleader #savetheworld

TIL that Wikinews shut down in May. They posted their own news article about it, but I got slightly more from this German news article: https://www.heise.de/en/news/Wikimedia-Foundation-is-shutting-down-news-project-Wikinews-11249432.html

I'm trying to read between the lines — e.g. bot traffic as a proportion isn't relevant; only the growth or loss of human traffic alone is relevant — but I think the main thing was that people were getting "news" as such from Wikipedia articles instead.

As a proud @wirsindverdi union member and #Wikipedia and #WikiNews editor, I signed the #EditorialStrike declaration https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Workers_United_solidarity and WWU Solidarity declaration: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Workers_United#Solidarity #unionize #verdi @gewerkschaftsgruen

Something I have long wanted to join and participate in just closed 😕 💔 - I always thought this site would be excellent for teaching blogging and independent journalism to ordinary people. But now it will close 😢

Boo...the Wikimedia Foundation killed wikinews. I suppose it's time to see if I can get RSS Bridge to scrape the current events portal, since I don't see an RSS feed...

I'm weeks late to this, but better late than never I guess.

The Wikimedia Foundation is closing down Wikinews, a citizen journalism website styled after Wikipedia.
Wikinews will become read-only on 4 May.

Wikimedia Board of Trustees approves closure of all #Wikinews projects by May 4. You may have never heard of Wikinews or haven’t visited the site in a long time which is part of the reason for the closure.

Q: does anyone actually use WikiNews as a news source?

Does anyone here write for it?

It seems like a great project, but is it an ongoing enthusiastic project?

Borderline adorable/bittersweet: "news brief" recorded by English #Wikinews gumboyaya in June 2006, when Wikinews people were still trying very hard.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:170606_1800_newsbriefs.ogg

I don't remember how I felt about it at the time or if I even knew about it.

I found the file via #WikiRadio (https://www.monkeon.co.uk/wikiradio/ ) and the attribution link back to Wikinews was broken (possibly since the very beginning)...

#Wikimedia

A consultation on the future of #Wikinews has been kicked off, with a thorough review. Discussion is starting. Thanks to Victoria Doronina for all her work with this!

They outline the versatility of Wikimedia projects and how they fit with various educational contexts and pedagogical approaches.

#media #wikinews
