TIL that Wikinews shut down in May. They posted their own news article about it, but I got slightly more from this German news article: https://www.heise.de/en/news/Wikimedia-Foundation-is-shutting-down-news-project-Wikinews-11249432.html
I'm trying to read between the lines — e.g. bot traffic as a proportion isn't relevant; only the growth or loss of human traffic alone is relevant — but I think the main thing was that people were getting "news" as such from Wikipedia articles instead.

Something I have long wanted to join and participate in just closed 😕 💔 - I always thought this site would be excellent for teaching blogging and independent journalism to ordinary people. But now it will close 😢

أوقفت مؤسسة ويكيميديا مشروع ويكينوز بعد 21 عاماً، وذلك بوضعه في وضع القراءة فقط. يأتي هذا القرار بسبب مخاوف تتعلق بالاستدامة، وانخفاض نشاط المجتمع، وتوفر تغطية إخبارية أشمل عبر منصات مثل ويكيبيديا. يناقش أعضاء المجتمع حالياً سبل مواصلة محتوى ويكينوز وتعاوناته بشكل مستقل.

Boo...the Wikimedia Foundation killed wikinews. I suppose it's time to see if I can get RSS Bridge to scrape the current events portal, since I don't see an RSS feed...
