My (trans) gf made me feel justifiably dumb for questioning whether it was okay to make some of my OCs transfem based on vibes
So now I have 3 transfem characters in a story I'm writing and I'm happy :)

Me, gluing SQL queries to web frontends: "Why am I doing this. This isn't real software engineering. Ugh. Wasting my career."
Me, writing C API bindings to glue a dynamic library to some Python: Aw yiss this is the real shit!!!

I've noticed a weird corner-case in my psychology that I don't have a name for, but it's definitely there.
Picked up a loaner car from my mechanic because they have my car in to change the oil (side-note: thanks folks! The fact yinz offer a loaner car is huge). On the loaner contract, they highlighted a part where I had to bring a receipt proving I'd filled the gas tank.
This is new, so I asked what's up: normally I just bring the car back with the tank full. I even top it off for them because, hey, it's like three spare bucks for me and it saves someone on the staff a trip out in the cold.
Boss tells me the needle sticks a bit, so the receipt is to make sure it got filled. "Even if it's just fifty cents," he says, "need the receipt." Otherwise, they charge a flat $20 for a courtesy fill.
Now, my normal process is: drive over, fill the tank at the station two minutes from their garage, drop it off. But now that a receipt is involved? I'm inclined to fill it two minutes from my office, drive a half-hour to their garage and drop it off... Just so there's less actual gas in the tank.
I don't know why I'm like this. But when someone replaces a reasonable system between two rational actors with a contract and rules, it's like part of my brain flips a switch and goes "Oh. There are rules now. That must mean this is a game. And I intend to win."

I hate that I can't watch any horror film involving the devil, or anything biblically based without that part of me popping up that fell down a Abrahamic religions research rabbit hole for a decade. Why can't I just enjoy it without pointing out what's not correct, etc? #WhyAmILikeThis

“Ok so I’ve built a cache aware system of counters, epoch base concurrent reclamation, and an alignment-guaranteed vectorized min-match search.”
“What was the project again?”
“A skip list.”
“So you’ve done linked lists, search, insert, all that?”
“… no.”

So, there's an ad on TV, well, streaming, for the line of jeep vehicles.
However, one part is "when T Rex is chasing you, you can bet it's a Jeep getting away," and it's the scene form Jurassic Park.
But we all know the vehicles in that move were Ford Explorers, right?

You know that feeling of intense anxiety before you do something mundane and normal, and after it all turns out (surprise surprise) mundane and normal, you think to yourself, "Oof, I'm a hot mess. Why am I like this?"?
Or just me?

My partner is new to mastodon. She said it seemed very male-dominated. I wanted to check this out, because I don't want to be one of those "I only follow dudes in my dudespace" people. In other words, this was me checking my own experience.
What I did:
1. Counted 200 (actually 208) posts in the 'federated' feed for c.im as they came through; tried to identify gender of all individuals posting, from usernames/pics (I know!) or chosen pronouns if that didn't seem glaringly obvious. This is in 'federated_feed'.
2. Did the same for 100 posts in my home feed (really just 99). For this and the previous item, individuals might be counted 2 or more times.
3. Tried to tally apparent gender for the accounts I follow (N=160).
'x' means a bot (e.g. The Guardian or Hourly Fops) or someone whose gender I wasn't confident I could guess at. Mostly it was bots.
Takeaways (right now):
1. There are a LOT of bots/newsfeeds/etc. in the big overall federated feed. My home feed has a much lower percentage of those.
2. Across the board there appears* to be a significant male bias in posts in the federated feed: 2.5 times more apparently-male than apparently-female posts (i.e., 150% bias? Am I doing this right?).
3. Both in the people I follow and the posts I saw (this specific day; IDK how representative that is), there is still a male bias, but it's much less extreme. Posts in my feed: 31% male-female bias; people I'm following: 27% bias.
There is probably a much easier and more representative way to do this, like by IDK using an API or scraping people's pronouns or something, but it was honestly faster for me to do it this way than learn the "simple" way.
* This is unlikely to be a truly representative sample of federated posts/accounts, but it's also probably not ridiculously far off; I suspect the trends would hold for larger/more representative samples.

Heck yeah! I aced my #archaeology course. I guess taking a class while working 40 plus hours a week and serving as an exec officer on two boards IS possible. #humblebrag #WhyAmILikeThis?
