I'm not sure who needs to hear this (if anyone), but if you need to listen to your own heartbeat and lack a stethoscope, many modern hollow-wood interior doors will do the trick well enough. Lean your chest up against the door, turn your head to one side and press your ear to it. You should hear, in a quiet enough place, the distinct and clear beating of your heart.
