Fresh revelations from the Canadian Governor General’s archives shed new light on the 1975 Whitlam Dismissal. Notes from Jules Léger show that John Kerr told him the Queen personally approved of his sacking of Gough Whitlam, confirming suspicions that the Palace was more involved than admitted. Kerr defended his actions as serving the monarchy, even though Whitlam still had the confidence of the House while Fraser did not. These findings deepen the constitutional scandal and renew calls for full transparency from the National Archives of Australia, which still delays releasing key files. The truth about the Dismissal is still emerging, fifty years on.

Looking forward to hearing the podcast series.

I hadn't checked in on what has been uncovered for decades. And then found material that shocked me. Especially when viewed alongside #NuganHandBank material.

  3. I was at the August 1976 anti-Fraser demo at Monash. Since then I've often looked at photos of the event, but today I saw a photo which I'm pretty sure included me! It's impossible to be certain, but several contemporaries have agreed its me. BTW, he was barricaded into a toilet. They claim it was an engineer's office, but also say they had to squeeze him out of a small window. An engineer with only a window that small in his office?

  4. CW: History podcast plug

A new episode of In Those Days is out today (after a break of over a year, whoops).

Christina Adams and I are joined by husband of the pod, Lincoln Turner. We discuss Lincoln's grandfather's letters to the editor, published in the Canberra Times in the '60s and '70s and digitised in #Trove.

Was really fun talking about Major Eugene Milton Sanchez who was a big character who had big adventures.

It was also great to record in State Library Victoria's podcast studio - it's so nice in there and it's free! Almost don't want to tell people about it, because everyone will be there.
