Okay, please let's clarify this a bit.

First of all, you're right. I'm a white guy in a very white environment, therefore I'm not qualified to question the problem or tell any black person how to feel about and approach anything.

All I can offer to the table/debate is my white-privileged POV, my experience as an anti-fascist activist in the hostile anti-anti-fascist environment of Dresden/Germany, and an interpretation of things I do observe.

My observation was/is:

Instead of bringing up own #blackfedi instances running own choices of AP-enabled software, (de-)federating under own statues, moderating by own trusted community members under an own set of rules, I saw a lot of people trying to establish a #blackmastodon user base on white-owned an run #whitemastodon instances and - it didn't work out. Obviously.

Therefore I'd love to see the black community not to try to "occupy white places" here (while it makes very good sense IRL!) where awareness to black needs is a matter of white good will, but to EXPAND the :fediverse: with a whole new black star system, gaining an own black gravity and by this the respect and leverage to influence the developement i.e. of the east-german based and very white #Mastodon project.

This is what the #Fediverse :fediverse: and its #decentralization is all about, to become independent from accumulated powers, and the way to become a respected part of it is #SelfHosting. :cyber_heart:

I do not understand what #tags like #BlackMastodon do to bring people closer together. Especially if the terms white/black cannot be used in the same way.

You cannot undo harm done to innocent people by stigmatizing other innocent people or even an entire race.

Dear #WhiteMastodon: you’re mostly incapable of understanding why many of us do not want to federate with #Meta. Stop trying to explain to us that we will somehow hurt ourselves by not associating with people using a service run by a soulless man who couldn’t care less about net safety. If they really want to join the fediverse, they can do so the same way we did. Meta is like the cruise ship of social media. It’s gross, and the folks on it really don’t care about the scenery.

So there are what, over 11K Mastodon instances & less than 20 BIPOC-owned instances?!?

Correct me if these numbers are wrong. This is totally unscientific, just a perception of North America.

Update: It would be interesting to see estimates for non-North American instances & BIPOC-ownership.

I guess there is no need for a #WhiteMastodon hashtag, the whole #Fediverse is almost all white dominated.

66 years of accumulating wisdom & I am still not finished.

I'm #Native & #Jewish. I'm outside the dominant white Christian European-American colonizer culture to a large degree. My 2nd class status is made apparent to me every day.

Still, by the time I was 30 years old, I was nearly fully assimilated. I was mostly erased with only token acknowledgement of my cultures.

If I can start the journey, you can too.

The white Christian European-American colonizer culture is so strong and deeply embedded, even atheists and socialists are filled up with it over their heads.

You have to say yeah I'm racist, I'm an enslaver, I'm a colonizer, I benefit from these systems and I like it... before you can even begin to strip yourself and your life of these messed up ideologies.

It IS important for us to rid ourselves of colonizer framing. How we talk, how we write, how we read... I'd go a step further and venture that 99.9% of Bible translation, interpretation and just plain reading comprehension by -everyone- is tainted and flawed.

@Are0h I don't know how interested you are in the #BrownMastodon experience, but so far it's about 35/65 yes/no.

I'm guessing the ratio would be very skewed the other way for the #BlackMastodon experience, like 90/10. Ha e you thought about running a similar poll? The comparative data would be a teachable moment.

And the #WhiteMastodon experience 10/90. I speculate
