CW: Moments with my whippet: Castorp and the heat
During the current heat wave, my Castorp lies flat on his blanket all day, legs stretched out, minimal movements. I walk him in the very early morning, before 5pm, when the air is fresh. We understand each others passivity during the day; our shared bodily response to the unsupportive temperatures is an extra bond between us. In our house we have a gentle cooling airflow in the room by the garden, shaded by trees. We both enjoy it, there's no need to explain its quiet comfort to each other.

CW: Moments with my whippet: Castorp enjoys his run as the sun rises
Summer solstice. We were in the mood to mark the occasion and took Castorp to the hill, in time for sunrise at 04:52.
He was racing along across the field as the red ball of the sun emerged behind the next hill. It's been a while since I last watched an actual sunrise, I had forgotten how fast it all is: less than a minute from first glimpse to fully out.
Castorp is now resting contentedly at my feet.
Welcome to the longest day!

Castorp lies asleep on his blanket, next to me. Suddenly very heavy breathing, legs are moving, there's even a rare bark. (He never barks when he's awake.)

Night time, I'm in the middle of some writing. Castorp comes out of his den, he shakes himself up, then settles on the rug next to me. He sits there for a while, perfectly still. Then he gets up again and moves back into his den.
Oh that trust can be so complete and unpolluted.

Working in the night, writing my paper. Castorp calls me. I step over to his den, he stretches his head out and puts it into my open hand, ever so trusting. I gently scratch his forehead, he closes his eyes like a cat. I tell him about my worries, and that he is a good boy. He gets out and shakes himself up, as if he is wet from the rain and must shake out the rain. He does his night visit to the garden. When he is back, he gets another cuddle and goes back into his den to sleep. All is well. I go back to my work. What would we do without each other.

Conrad had finished packing his satchel. He put on his coat and his hat. Castorp, his whippet, had taken position by the door, watching him closely: you won't leave me behind, will you? Oh I'd better carry his coat, Conrad said to himself, there will be rain and we won't stop.
He did not lock the door when they left; there was no need for this anymore. Castorp walked two steps ahead, in the disciplined trot that he assumed when he was on alert, head high, looking left and right and feeling important.
How they made it through the marshland is unclear. They were sighted once or twice in the Poachers' Plain, the tall man with his long Australian Duster coat and the scruffy wide-rimmed hat, the dog always two steps ahead. Then they were forgotten.

I am standing in the garden smoking my evening pipe, enjoying the autumnal evening light on the neighbour's Acorn tree. My Castorp doesn't like being far from me, but he thinks it's too cold outside, so instead of coming out he sits next to the glass door, watching me from nearby. He spots my woollen winter cap on the chair and grabs it with his mouth, waves it about a bit, then nestles his nose in it, sniffing the Govn'or's smell. Oh, now he licks it; mutual cleaning is important! I didn't have the heart to stop hm.

Sunday. A golden autumn afternoon, the sun stands low, the light is flat and warm. Out walking with Castorp, to the vast field at the edge of town where he used to run. It's a development site now, some 30 or so new houses are already up, all built on the cheap by one of England's ruthless mega-builders. Castorp and I squeeze by on the narrow footpath that is still open, right next to the site. The warm autumn light reminds us that the world could be good. The path we walk on is filled with litter. Everything around us says farewell. Castorp, of course, is all excited and happy, untroubled by the ugly site, busy sniffing around to read the social media messages from his buddies in the grass.

We treasure spiders in our house, they are our insect police. Our daughters don't quite see it that way. When N found a large spider in her room, she got frightened and insisted on setting up a mattress and her duvets in the living room, to sleep downstairs for a few nights.
Castorp my whippet is not allowed in our upstairs bedrooms, but this was his chance to share a bed with one of his family. He settled proudly in the centre of the improvised bed and declared it his own. N could just about squeeze in next to him. She loved it, of course.
Castorp looked at us half defiantly, half accusingly. Can't you see that this is where I belong, snuggling up with my sister? he said. Why don't you let me do this always? Things are so easy, why don't you humans understand how simple it is to live well? Just stop being stuffy and difficult.

Last week we had a day's family outing to Salisbury, with guests. A fine late-summer afternoon, some clouds but no rain, a warm day with hints of autumn in the air.
We took Castorp with us, so I had an excuse to avoid the museum. Instead I could sit on a bench on the green by the cathedral, Castorp lying next to me on the grass. I soaked up the beauty of the building in front of me, a stony dream of a spiritual England, long lost yet still lingering on.
Meanwhile Castorp dreamt of a chicken dish, checked out every dog that passed by, and felt safe since he was near me.

My Castorp comes out, once or twice during the night. Stretching. Once backward, once forward. I talk to him and tell him I love him. I stroke him. But for him this is just a physical necessity and, for once, he isn't really interested in my attention. He goes straight back into his den.
His beauty comes from his complete honesty.

A hot day, but our house stays cool (we have some hidden brook flowing under the house). It's evening, I sit by the open window, watching an old Westwing episode on my phone. Castorp, my whippet, is curled up on his blanket next to me.
I watch the video, but suddenly I realise I am being looked at. It's Castorp. His dark eyes looking at me intensely, a gaze of trust and affection. His ears pricked up in full attention. All in complete stillness and silence.
We look at each other like this for a few minutes. Boy, I haven't felt like this since when I held J's hands for the first time, as a young man. Castorp sure knows how to play me. I tell him I love him. He understands.

Our Castorp is now four and a half years old. He's our first Whippet, so I have no personal experience of general patterns, but it seems to me that he's come to his own, still playful but with an added layer of serenity.
He's nimble and curious. He soaks up my daughters' noisy affection with childlike joy. His eyes when he looks at me are deeper than ever. He runs for joy, his own pure undiluted joy. When we walk as a family, he walks ahead and checks the environment, his family's safety depends on it. He sits near me in quiet contentment, not moving one bit. I do a noisy bookcase search near his den in the middle of the night (I need that book!) --- he stays cool, he knows it's me. He does his rhoah-rhoar-rhour growl when family members play or cuddle without him. At night he looks at me just to check. He rolls on his back, all legs in the air, and gets belly rubs from my daughters. Bless you, Castorp.
