Made a wrapper script for flac(1) because you can't configure defaults (e.g. "use compression level 8 if none is given on the command line, not the hard-coded default of 5") and whipper (the CD ripper I'm using) doesn't let you choose a level or customize the flac command line either.
This is stupid, but at least it's possible to work around it.

Sooo… Ended up back at Watchhouse slab with top geezers @Jeremy & @Robin. Inevitably, I introduced Jeremy to "Anonymous Bosch". For anyone following along, you'll remember it spat me off at the crux last time before I worked out how to do it, so I was after sendgeance. Unfortunately, my memory was kinda faulty so I well messed up the crux first go following Jeremy's beta instead of my own. On the up-side, my mojo was stronger this time, as was my shoulder, so things were looking up for the second try of the day once the brain had been jogged. Great route, fun moves and good catches from Jeremy.

It wasn't all sunshine and sends in Nice... There was quite a lot of rain and whips too. The one had something to do with the other because damp limestone can be a little slick, though the reasons also included grade sandbagging, fatigue and just plain sucking. Anyway, I thought I'd post a little compilation of Nice whips because who doesn't like a bit of schadenfreude?

Finally found a CD ripper for Linux – Whipper – with the goal of creating accurate copies, rather than doing it fast.
It's a command line tool, which may sound daunting, but after running a few commands to calibrate the settings to your CD-ROM, it's as easy as typing "whipper cd rip" to rip to FLAC with metadata from MusicBrainz. Very nice!

Is 10 minutes enough time to recover between hard flash attenpts? Probably not, but oh, well! This one was just too tempting, and I was hoping the anecdotal evidence of it being easier wasn't wrong. Was it? Let's find out... Send or not?

Entre #Whipper y #CyanRip de momento me gusta más CyanRip. Parece que el desarrollador entiende mejor cómo funciona #cdparanoia. Añade #ReplayGain y carátulas. Hace uso de #FFmpeg por lo que puede potencialmente soportar más formatos de salida. Y es más rápido. Whipper realiza una primera lectura completa del CD diciéndote los errores CRC que encuentra, luego inicia una segunda lectura para volcar las pistas y una tercera lectura para verificarlas. Aparentemente CyanRip realiza todo eso en una única lectura. Whipper además parece que tiene un error al interpretar los resultados de cdparanoia tirando excepciones de división por zero al intentar obtener la calidad de pistas con longitud zero (debería de reintentar leer silenciosamente, CyanRip al final te da un resumen con los intentos de relectura y verificación de cdparanoia). Además la hoja CUE (https://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=Cue_sheet) escrita por Whipper no tiene metadatos y de los dos CD que he probado uno la ha generado un tanto raro, jugando con el comando INDEX (ripeado más de una vez y hace lo mismo).
El único contra de CyanRip es que tienes que indicarle manualmente qué versión del disco que hay en la base de datos de #MusicBrainz quieres utilizar.

Prueba superada. He volcado (ripeado) el mismo #CD con #cyanrip y me ha sacado un #FLAC con idéntico sonido.
Para verificarlo he importado ambos FLAC en #Audacity, uno de ellos lo he invertido (en catalán, «capgirat», el efecto «inverteix» cambia el orden temporal de las muestras, no su amplitud). Después mezclar y renderizar en una pista nueva. El resultado tenía que ser silencio y silencio es lo que se obtiene.

Por suerte los formatos de audio han evolucionado. Primero fue el DVD Audio y luego el Blu-ray Audio. Ambos tienen métodos de corrección de errores más avanzados. Pero no han tenido mucha difusión.
#Whipper no va mal. Es gracioso que para validar el offset del lector/grabador tenga que poder leer todas las pistas de forma exacta a la primera. Luego quieres volcar (ripear) ese mismo CD y tiene que andar haciendo varios intentos para cada pista. 🤦

Fedora updated the libcdio-paranoia libraries so users can use it with a fix for an issue with CD ripping on drives with a +667 offset, amongst others.
and it works on my portable Pioneer BD drive.
Fucking FINALLY, I can rip CDs on Whipper. I can now uninstall the Windows-based rippers I ran in WINE.

Another from the "trying hard at White Spider Climbing" series... New comp wall set has lots of goodies to play with and some actually friendly grades for a change! This one's definitely easier than my other project, but equally entertaining, if only for the good air at the end! Thanks to Jon Koplin for the catch and encouragement.

So I haven't posted a project update in a while... Partly because I've not had the occasion to get on it (read: in part distracted by shiny new climbs), but also because my last attempt was dire. I wasn't going to post this, but then I thought; failing is absolutely part of the process of climbing better, so why hide it? Plus, I guess it's kinda funny? Good spot from Jeremy :-)

On a day when I had WAY low motivation and energy, I figured, "Yeah, may as well at least see if I can stick that crux move again on toprope... Probably won't even get TO the crux today, but what the heck..."
Turns out it was actually a pretty good day! Just goes to show; climbing is really good for your mood and excercise gets your energy up! (Or maybe that was the adreneline rush from the whip at the end... Excellent catch by Jeremy Donaldson)
