Je me mets à la gouache et ça m'enchante parce mon syndrome de l'imposteur m'avait dit que je serais nulle. par contre c'était sombre ça piquait les yeux un peu. Il mese di ottobre è finito e, come di consueto, è il momento di aggiornare le statistiche sui film visti. Ottobre è un mese sempre pregno di visioni, visto la mole di roba che vedo durante la Festa del Cinema di Roma, e quest’anno forse ho un po’ esagerato, visto che durante il mese ho guardato ben 32 film (nuovo record). Il dato notevole, o inquietante (dipende dai punti di vista), è che in tutto il 2023 avevo guardato 197 film e che l’anno in cui ne ho visti di più, il 2020, ne ho guardati ben 224. Indovinate quanti ne ho visti nei primi dieci mesi di quest’anno? 202, con davanti a me due mesi dove non ho molte altre prospettive, se non quelle di vedere altri film. Ma ho anche dei difetti.

I Dannati Non Piangono (1950): Celebre come regista di grandi personaggi femminili, Vincent Sherman in questo noir dirige la sua compagna Joan Crawford, magnifica, come sempre in grado di reggere il film praticamente sulle sue spalle. Una donna di umili origini riesce a guadagnarsi una posizione nell’alta società, accompagnandosi a gangster e malavitosi e trascinando nel vortice anche un onesto contabile. Melodramma non sempre credibile e non perfetto in tutto, ma vedere Joan Crawford fare l’ennesima variazione sul tema “Joan Crawford” basta e avanza.

Vermiglio (2024): La sorpresa italiana dell’anno arriva dalla regista trentina Maura Delpero, che dal nulla vince il Leone d’Argento a Venezia e soffia a Sorrentino la possibilità di rappresentare l’Italia ai prossimi Premi Oscar. Nel 1944, l’arrivo di un soldato siciliano nel paesino alpino che dà il nome al film, scombussola la lenta quotidianità di una famiglia. La cosa che colpisce, oltre alla bellezza della messa in scena, è la credibilità del film: la distribuzione del latte al mattino, l’uso del dialetto, i personaggi (un cast di esordienti piuttosto sorprendente per un film italiano). Crudo nel suo realismo, potente nei suoi non detti, è davvero uno dei migliori film italiani usciti quest’anno, se non il migliore.

Woman of the Hour (2024): Esordio dietro la macchina da presa per Anna Kendrick, con un thriller basato su una storia vera, quella dell’assassino seriale Rodney Alcala, che incrocia i suoi passi con un’aspirante attrice durante un celebre show televisivo. Tutta la parte dello show, pur priva di un vero e proprio finale, è interessante, a tratti anche coinvolgente e tiene incollati allo schermo. Il problema del film è tutto il resto: i flashback con gli omicidi, il finale piatto, per non parlare dell’estetica pop, troppo pulita, troppo colorata, incapace di ricreare un’atmosfera di tensione. Sembra comunque l’anno dei film ambientati durante show anni 70: questo arriva dopo Late Night with the Devil e Saturday Night. Lo trovate su Netflix.

Fremont (2023): Il mio colpo di fulmine del mese. Si tratta del più bel film simil-Kaurismaki non girato da Kaurismaki, anche perché dietro la macchina da presa c’è l’iraniano Babak Jalali. Una rifugiata afgana, ex traduttrice per l’esercito americano durante la guerra ai talebani, lavora in California dove confeziona biscotti della fortuna. Soffre di insonnia ed è una ragazza molto sola. Decide di rivolgersi a uno psicanalista per sperare di farsi prescrivere dei sonniferi, ma sarà solo l’inizio di un percorso che le potrebbe permettere di superare i suoi problemi. Delicato come un sorbetto al limone, dolce come un biscotto, questo film è come una la tazza di tè caldo durante una tempesta, un plaid sulle gambe quando l’umidità ti gela le ossa, il legno di un camino che scoppietta in bianco e nero. Con un finale che non si dimentica, è il classico tipo di film che inseguo da mesi e di cui poi mi innamoro per sempre. Lo trovate su Rai Play, sia doppiato che in versione originale. Guardatelo.

When Evil Lurks (2023): Il problema di tanti buonissimi horror di oggi è che illudono con una prima parte folgorante e poi si siedono su una sceneggiatura che, nel terzo atto, non sa più come tirare i fili: è il caso del tanto chiacchierato Longlegs (ora in sala, ve ne ho parlato qui) e, in parte, lo è di questo bel film argentino diretto da Demian Rugna. Nell’Argentina rurale, due fratelli si trovano alle prese con un caso di possessione che rischia di permettere a un demone di creare scompiglio in tutta la provincia. Detto così sembra una cazzata, ma il film si basa davvero su una premessa splendida, che terrorizza, con espedienti visivi credibili, potenti, coinvolgenti. C’è qualche riferimento al clamoroso horror spagnolo Come si può uccidere un bambino? e due-tre scene stupende, ma soprattutto 40 minuti iniziali di grande cinema horror. Poteva essere veramente uno degli horror del decennio, ma sciupa un po’ il vantaggio iniziale, pur restando comunque un ottimo film.

By far one of the best horror films this year! 🤯 Rugna creates his own cosmos that looks and feels like our world, but has its own rules. You follow the events like a nightmare at first, but then you accept it completely as reality. That's what makes this extremely smart, realistic and brutal film so incriminating and dreadful: it doesn't just mirror the pandemic and climate change. If demonic possession existed, this is how it would play out in our society. 😱

The visceral meatiness of #WhenEvilLurks, a demonic-possession–infectious-zombie combo, hits like a blow.
