  1. I’ve had a humbling week in the studio. After 13 years of #WheelThrowing, I sat down at my wheel on Monday and couldn’t manage to successfully complete a single form. There’s typically a large gap between throwing cycles for me because my decorating process is long, so by the time I get back around to throwing, I’m out of practice. I took it as an opportunity to return to the basics and seek advanced wheel throwing tips. Each day has been better than the last. #pottery

  2. A few in-progress photos of "Meema's tulip bowl."

I threw this as one piece, but later learned that the more standard approach for creating pedestal bowls is to throw two separate pieces and attach them together. 🤷🏻

  3. #ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 20: Meema's tulip bowl.

My grandmother (my Meema) painted a tulip bowl still life when she was 16; her painting now hangs in my home. I was admiring the bowl's shape and thought, "maybe I could make that!"

So here is my Meema's tulip bowl, brought to life.

  4. The interior of my garlic pot. The azure blue makes me happy every time I open it.

  5. #ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 16: vivid sunset.

I love using underglazes to paint gradients on my pottery. This cache pot was inspired by a particularly vivid sunset on a clear day.

  6. #ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 15: homage to Na'nízhoozhí.

As a kid I visited my grandmother who lived in Gallup, New Mexico, and she would take me to nearby Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni galleries. I was thinking about the pottery shapes and colors of the artwork from that area as I worked on this vase.

  7. #ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 8: layers of blue.

I had a several month break in taking pottery classes, and was worried that I would lose the knowledge I had built – but to my relief I picked things up quickly again when I recommenced classes. ☺️

One thing I particularly love about pottery is the trimming process (see lakesidepottery.com/Pages/Pott ), and I enjoy carving layers and textures as part of that process.

  8. #ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 7: ruffled.

This was the first large-ish pot I made on the wheel. Someone put a dent in the edge, so I decided to go along with it and created a ruffled edge.

  9. Leading up to this year's winter solstice I'm participating in Art Advent Calendar. This year I'm trying to include only pieces that I worked on in 2025. Let's see how this goes. 😅

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 1: a pot I threw during a pottery class in January. The clay body is electric brown, with a blue-green glaze. I'm currently using the pot to root some lipstick plant cuttings.

  10. Attaching a tall neck to the base of a pedestal vase:

    1. Let the base dry to leather hard

    2. Recenter it on the wheel, slip & score around the opening

    3. Measure the diameter of the opening with calipers

    4. Throw a short, thick cylinder that matches the diameter of the opening

    5. Cut that cylinder off the bat and move it to the leather hard base. Center it on top.

    6. Throw downward to attach the cylinder to the base.

    7. Pull the clay up to desired form.

  11. Day 14: Another sunset-inspired piece. 😊

This is one of the taller wheel-thrown pieces I've made so far (standing at a whopping 4" after having been trimmed and fired 😅).

  12. Day 7: The third pot I made in my intro to pottery class. This one actually has consistent walls throughout – a big achievement!

  13. Day 4: the second pot I made in my wheel throwing class.

I took this one off the wheel when it was super thick because I wanted a piece to take through the next steps, and I was afraid I'd ruin it if I tried to throw it longer.

And with this pot, I discovered that I really love the trimming process. The end result is a colorful ribbed pot that's become my favorite snack dish.

  14. Day 2: I started taking a wheel throwing class for the first time since highschool. I hated it in highschool but I figured that I've got more patience now than I did as a teenager. 😅

This is my very first pot. Super small, but it's just the right size for an air plant.

  15. No matter how big I make the bowl it shrinks to the size of a cereal bowl I swear #Pottery #Clay #Ceramics #WheelThrowing

  16. Anyway, here’s the latest load of pottery we decanted from the kiln yesterday. The majority of it is my dads work as he has taken to pottery like you wouldn’t believe, who knew this would be a good retirement hobby for him 😁 #Pottery #Ceramics #Clay #WheelThrowing

  17. The first neti pot is here!
This is the fruit of months of learning on the wheel and trying to get it right.

  18. Reduction firing brings out the copper's colour from the copper oxide.
In the presence of oxygen inside the kiln, copper fires to different shades of green and turquoise.
In the absence of oxygen, reduction happens and the copper is revealed.

  19. When life gives you lemons, you put them in a really nice bowl 😉
