Wheel of Time book seven complete! Now on to Path of Daggers. But not tonight.
I’m very quickly approaching all new material because I believe I was partway thru eight when I stopped reading before.

I’m still salty that the show got canceled. 😡
But funnily enough, on the spur of the moment, I rewatched this absolutely magnificent episode yesterday and it turned out that it was exactly a year ago that I first saw the same episode.

CW: Wheel of Time (no spoilers), Reading
I’m nearing the last 20% or so of Book 5, and there are so many loose ends. I’ve really loved these books but the story seems so all over the place. I don’t plan on stopping, but editing would’ve been helpful.
-
Just started with the Eye of the World. Many people complain that it's too similar to Lord of the Rings.
That's not a problem for me, I haven't read Lord of the Rings either!!
I've tried to start reading this series before, two years ago when my low reading comprehension allowed me to read only easier books. I had to put it down because it was too slow paced and difficult for me then.
I've warmed up to slower pace since then, and my vocabulary is considerably better.

Had a conversation on discord where I recommended when reading Wheel of Time to just read 1-5 then skip to 12–14. Guy was really upset about that, thinking I ruined the experience.
Eh, I enjoyed myself, and got a satisfying conclusion to a series I had once loved and stopped when I got frustrated in the middle.
I’ll be honest, I kinda wish I could tell people to skip book 1, but it’s kinda important if weak.

While it is fun having the progress shown as 3500 / 13488 with The Complete Wheel of Time ebook, I wanted to enjoy the individual covers as well.
Luckily Calibre with the epub-split plugin made that rather painless, just some metadata adjustments.
Also kudos to TOR publishing for intentionally providing a DRM-free epub, making this possible (without having to remove it beforehand)

Over my lunch break, I reached the end of _Knife of Dreams_, the eleventh novel of Robert Jordan's _Wheel of Time_ series (and the last written solo). What a huge amount of work these represent! I don't remember reading so ambitious a world-building exercise. Now I just have the final trilogy of novels combining Jordan's thoughts with Brandon Sanderson's pen.

Rand said, "I didn't just come here. Egwene invited me into the women's apartments."
Nynaeve lowered her knitting and gave him an amused smile. "the Light help me, Rand, you are becoming more Shienaran every day. invited into the women's apartments, indeed." she sniffed.not saying that Rand is trans, but I AM saying that Nynaeve is saying "trans rights" here

book two: THE GREAT HUNT by Robert Jordan
far from pretending to be dead and shacking up with a Cairhienen innkeeper, Rand is still in Shienar with the other Emond's Fielders and Moiraine and Lan
we open on Rand and Lan doing sword training, and a wind that pins Rand in place up on the wall
this is totes a thing one can do with the One Power, but at this time there's no one near enough to have done it
Lan says "strange things happen this close to the Blight", which Rand takes to mean that he isn't taking this rogue wind seriously
he also says "with the Amyrlin Seat coming here, you would be better off being a week gone from this place", which Rand takes to mean that he's in serious trouble and that the Amyrlin Seat will gentle him, or worse
we also learn that Moiraine has been ignoring him

I'm nearing the end of THE EYE OF THE WORLD and I'm trying to order my thoughts ... a lot of what I'm thinking touches on later stuff
but Rand "kills" "the Dark One" and Moraine STILL doesn't tell him he's the Dragon, as compared to in the TV show, where it's practically the first thing out of her mouth
like Moiraine [TV] is GOSSIPY compared to Moraine [book], and some of that has to be just the way modern TV shows are structured, like, she has to make it textual bc we don't have half a book of worldbuilding
but idk, bc they still could have had her keep it a secret from Rand, and frankly it makes her seem kind of ... incoherent
like, why does she work with Lanfear in season 2? they have to do this thing where he finds out she sent Logain to Cairhien so that he stops trusting her bc she was too trustworthy in season 1??? I guess???

"a beggar¹." the innkeeper² grunted. "half mad, I hear. even so, he could take the Queen's Bounty at the Palace, even with things as hard as they are. on High Days, the Queen³ gives it out with her own hands, and there's never anyone turned away for any reason. no one needs to beg in Caemlyn."
so, first of all, BASED. however, it keeps going:
"even a man under warrant can't be arrested while he's taking the Queen's Bounty."
THAT'S RIGHT, Y'ALL ... someone WANTED for a CRIME can walk into the PALACE and take WELFARE from the QUEEN'S OWN HAND and then LEAVE AGAIN and NO ONE can arrest them!!!

¹ Padan Fain! (though of course we don't know this yet)
² Basel Gil! good friend of Thom Merrilin and my favorite innkeeper
³ and it's always the Queen, bc Andor is always ruled by a woman -
more changes that I don't mind/that make sense:
in the books, we follow Mat and Rand from Whitebridge¹ to Caemlyn, and see their journey in farm chores, juggling/flute playing in inns for room and board, and Darkfriends trying to kill them (with a sprinkling of Rand reacting to using the One Power)
it definitely makes sense to elide all of that into doing chores at one inn and one Darkfriend trying to kill them and one instance of channeling (but no reactions), but I didn't realize until I read the book that the inn and the Darkfriend were inventions of the TV show ...
like I guess it makes sense not to do the Four Kings in Shadow story, if you're also introducing Thom Merrilin (and additionally doing the Aiel in a cage thing), bc that story was already kinda involved

Your favorite fantasy TV series was cancelled, now what? RPGs
A few years ago it was the heyday of big, high fantasy TV series. Yes, the grit of Game of Thrones and Witcher were still popular, but there were also a selection of shows with a higher level of magic, higher level of heroism and a set of characters who you wanted to win. It was the era of peak fantasy TV.
Slowly but surely these faded away.
Screenshot of Willow on Disney+Some series got a reasonable run — The Magicians reached a conclusion. Some series were cut quite short — Willow, ended with more story to tell.
Universes were announced to be expanding. Shadow & Bone went from having the Six of Crows spinoff announced to the entire project dying.
There was big money in fantasy for a bit. These weren’t Brit TV specials like Merlin or modern attempts at low budget like Xena.
The biggest money of them all is still around. Rings of Power, the prequel-ish endeavor by Prime Video churns along at price points that are normally saved for theater or Andor.
The wheel weaves as the wheel wills, always turning.
Sometimes the wheel destroys the things you enjoy, like Wheel of Time — especially the last half of season 2 and all of season 3 with strong reviews and great fan appreciation. While there was enormous pushback against the changes made to adapt to the shorter run time of a book plus a bit per season, as well as pushback against the attempts to be less coded and more openly diverse, the series was generally well received. It was generally profitable.
It’s gone.
The story won’t finish (except in the books, which will always be around). Yes, there’s a petition to Save Wheel of Time. I hope it succeeds. Brandon Sanderson seems to suggest it should, but will not.
Petitions and book reading are passive.
Don’t be passive — adapt those stories to an RPG
Playing games in those worlds is active participation in the fandom, and helps build out that word of mouth.
You don’t need to have an authorized book in order to play. Any fantasy series, movie, video game, book, comic, etc can show up at your table.
You can instead borrow the themes, cultures, characters and put them in your world. Sure, you could play pure within the world created by Robert Jordan or Lev Grossman or Jonathan Kasdan.
The power of roleplaying games is that the tale is yours, no one can take it from you. The rules can be simple enough to fit on a business card or so complex it fills bookshelves.
What happens to Jade, Kit and Elora?
That’s up to you.
What happens to Mat, Perrin, Elayne, Min and the rest?
That’s up to you.
Take the themes, tropes and world of that story that a committee decided was no longer worth being told and tell it yourself.
That’s why I fell in love with D&D and RPGs in the 80s.
The unfinished trilogy, or maybe not
Back in my youth my bookshelves were covered with science fiction, fantasy and encyclopedias. Words on a page were meant to be consumed by me, like a black hole consumes a galaxy.
I’d shop at a used bookstore, looking for a new series to start. Except sometimes I’d never find book 2, let alone the inevitable trilogy. Sometimes I would start with book 3!
One of my favorite tales, and I say this as someone who had pets but didn’t really discover the love of pets until my 30s, was a story about a fading order of knights who rode giant tigers. The hero wasn’t really part of the order. His family was and he had that extremely large cat. In this dying world they journeyed, starting as outsiders and immediately recognized as legendary. But they were just a dude and a great cat.
They didn’t want to be heroes. It was so compelling, this story of man and beast who wanted to be normal while the world needed them to be great.
I never found book 2.
But I had already discovered Dungeons & Dragons. A character paralleling that tale was created. We roamed the worlds that Erik and Justin and Chis and Abel and Hayes and Jacob and Colin and Andrew and others created.
We finished that tale.
Wheel of Time is over, unless it isn’t
The series explored slightly different things from the books. One of those was how tales are told. There’s a suggestion from the meta of the series that within a world where there are endless retellings of tales and history.
What changes, and what stays the same is part of that story.
Your RPG could lean into that by playing similar characters at different levels, at different times with a power to oncer per month to have a past power show up, maybe ramping faster as time goes by.
Another possible exploration from the Wheel of Times series and books is how power corrupts. The nature of saidin is that man with power lose control of themselves — mentally, emotionally, physically.
Want to toss a saidin power into your D&D?
Maybe your Rand-ish character is a Warlock that has to roll on the Wild Magic table every time they cast a spell.
Of course, one of the most potent tales from the books that is amplified in the series is that women are not side characters. They are as important to the story, and powerfully so, as anyone else.
You don’t need special rules for this. The modern versions of D&D encourage this.
From Willow there is a connection in the series to the tales from the movie (history is a massive throughput in Wheel of Time as well).
To see this at your table means connecting a current adventure or campaign to one that ended a decade, a century, a millennia, an age ago.
A D&D campaign that builds off of former campaigns is a structure that generally needs some continuity of players, but can also be done through one-sheets, common knowledge pages and a regular re-telling of special moments.
This could happen around the campfire, on the steps of a temple, inside a tavern or any place where the PCs meet NPCs.
Find what’s important from these tales and make them your own
It’s rough to lose a special story.
You have your memory. You have your hope.
You have a game to help you continue the legends that are important to you. You don’t need Rafe or Sera or Kasdan.
You need dice, paper and a table of friends.

of all the changes #WheelOfTimeOnPrime made from the #WheelOfTime books, the one I most appreciate is Rand and Egwene's relationship, and to a lesser extent, the emotional intelligence of the Emond's Fielders
in the books, it's understood that Rand and Egwene would probably have gotten married, if he wasn't the Dragon and she couldn't channel, but the way it's written, they both feel very young when the books start, and they aren't actually dating/courting, and that plus the fact that the first book is almost entirely from Rand's perspective, always made their relationship feel one-sided to me
early on, he realizes that she's been accepted as woman, and thus of marriageable age, by the women of the village, and he says something like "just bc we're of age doesn't mean we have to get married right away" and she says "or at all" like the idea of marrying Rand doesn't mean anything to her one way or another
