In 1970, young writer Dewey Bunnell wrote a comedy sketch for the Smothers Brothers that was a variation on the famous “Who’s on First” routine, but using the names of racehorses instead of baseball players. Unfortunately, audiences hated it. Tommy and Dick Smothers blamed Dewey and fired him.
Distraught and out of a job, Dewey vowed to never name a horse again for as long as he lived. He abandoned comedy and turned to music. He formed the band America and wrote this song, which reached number one this week. The name of the song? — “A Horse With No Name”.
