The #discussions around the “what is a woman?” question are #fuelled by a lot of #hate, #transphobia, and #violence. While #trans #women are facing most of the #vitriol and #danger, online and off, these discussions really are about all #women’s #roles in #society.

@freemo I agree with him on cultural issues, but I kinda agree. The dude is relatively dense compared to most online right wing commentators and doesn’t always think through his arguments in his videos fully.
#WhatIsAWoman and some of his following tweets were good, but I think those are the only good things I’ve ever seen him do.

I don't know who needs to hear this but words don't refer to things in the physical world because there are no "things" in the physical world. Words refer to abstractions. That doesn't mean they're not useful but if you try to treat language like mathematics this will bite you in the ass real quick.
Mathematics don't work so well because they match reality perfectly, they work because we have created them from whole cloth with complete disregard for reality. Even basic geometric shapes are an impossibility in the physical world. The entirety of physical sciences are built on leaky abstractions we have found to offer predictive power, not perfect truths.
The universe is soup and we have to define the chunks into existence to make sense of it. Words mean what we agree on them meaning and this changes over time and that's fine. There's nothing special about "biological sex" and there's no reason to pretend gender has to give it any more than a passing glance when talking about society. Definitions are fuzzy, heuristics are king, truth is ultimately unknowable.

Of course it also explains some really obvious oversights like interviewing barely any trans laymen or interviewing only two “radfems”/“TERFs”

CW: What Is A Woman slight spoilers
At one point during #WhatIsAWoman, #PatrickGrzanka–who I found to be the most intelligent of the pro-trans movement featured in the documentary, though hard to respect due to his temperament–claimed that #MattWalsh was adopting a school of thought known as #essentialism. But I don’t know if or how there’s anything wrong with that.
