I have feared for some time that it will take severe consequences to jolt enough Americans out of their fancies.

The book linked has the Germans, about 10 years after the marching and rallying described above, slipping from their Nazi fancy into studied avoidance of considering the hell that had come for them after the marching and rallying.

I wonder what lies in America's future.

Je suis optimiste que ça ira, son dernier roman « Apeirogon » de 2020 (sur base réelle, un Palestinien et un Israélien ayant chacun perdu une fille dans le conflit, désormais déterminés à œuvrer ensemble pour la réconciliation au Proche-Orient) était monumental et – hormis les quelques sentences pathétiques – très bien écrit, construction fragmenté qu’on a comparé à #WGSebald en 1001 mini-chapitres, et allusion mathématique des « nombres amicaux » en prime. Il est vrai qu’avec « Twist » #McCann a encore traité un sujet en dehors de sa propre sphère d’expériences, mais si le résultat sera aussi remarquable que le prédécesseur, je ne me plaindrai pas trop. 2/3

Tout d’abord celui de #MathiasÉnard sorti justement la première semaine d’octobre que je passais en Provence : « Mélancolie des confins » débute une série arrangée par points cardinaux de la boussole, premier tome donc « nord ». Recueil de récits intérieurs, carnet de voyage, pensées géo-historio-littéraires – un peu dans l’esprit de #WGSebald des « anneaux de Saturne » qu’il cite en passant, ce premier volume de la tétralogie parle de Berlin où l’auteur sera de retour cette année en résidence au Wissenschaftskolleg pour un projet de roman d’« épopée arabe » : https://www.wiko-berlin.de/fellows/akademisches-jahr/2024/enard-mathias 1/2

Reading my 'Bavarian uncles'. It still seems strange, reassuringly jarring to me that, as a kid brought up in the NW of England, I can relate so well to these two artists who were brought up in remote Alpine villages. Due to the extensive time I spent in their neck of the woods, I completely understand all the cultural references, the people, their lives. Reading them, it's like being at a Christmas gathering of relations and hearing all the old, familiar stories. #WernerHerzog #WGSebald #books

Would be interesting to hear from a someone familiar with both the #HistoryOfGermany around 1930 and #Modi's targeting of Muslims in modern India.

How deep do the similarities go?
Is the future of India likely to follow a similar path to 1930s Germany?

I've got a faint memory of #WGSebald writing something about Germans in 1944 realising how valuable stability is compared to a imagined political utopia only after their homes and cities had been bombed to ruins and burnt to ash.
