We watched 'We Were Dangerous' [Neon] last night. It's a 2024 film about a group delinquent girls in 1954 Aotearoa who are relocated to a remote island (filmed on Ōtamahua / Quail Island). Bad things happen - we are talking about state care - and a trio of the girls plot rebellion. It stars a marvellous Rima Te Wiata as the strict, conflicted, bible-bashing matron and a wonderful Erana James as Nellie, one of the trio. They both shine in this film. I wanted to like this more, but the story and the actors are let down by a script that doesn't full round out the characters nor provide them with sufficient emotional depth and nuance. It felt like a very 2020's look at the 1950's and it didn't gel. The ending felt very abrupt too, leaving much unanswered and unresolved. I would still warmly recommend it but the stories of abuse in state care deserves a better telling on the screen than this. Three stars.
