De graphics op de website is een paars wormgat, hoe leuk is dat! 🤩
En natuurlijk end to end encryptie, grotendeels open source (rest zijn ze mee bezig). Had ik dat wormgat al genoemd?
Je hoeft geen e-mailadres adres op te geven, encrypted file blijft max 24 uur op de server.

Jeśli trzymasz swoje portfolio na Vimeo, zrób kopię zapasową. Natychmiast. Serwis, który przez dwie dekady był profesjonalną alternatywą dla YouTube’a, właśnie padł ofiarą brutalnej restrukturyzacji.

Nowy właściciel, fundusz Bending Spoons, zastosował swoją ulubioną taktykę: kupić, zwolnić, wycisnąć.

Rzeź wideo w serwisie wideo

Wiadomość brzmi jak ponury żart, ale niestety jest prawdziwa. Jak donosi Engadget i Business Insider, zaledwie kilka miesięcy po przejęciu Vimeo za 1,38 miliarda dolarów, firma Bending Spoons przeprowadziła masowe zwolnienia.

Pracownicy donoszą w mediach społecznościowych, że pracę straciła „większość firmy”. Najbardziej szokujący jest jednak szczegół ujawniony przez jednego z inżynierów: zwolniono cały zespół odpowiedzialny za technologię wideo. Tak, dobrze czytacie. Platforma hostingowa nie ma już ludzi, którzy rozwijają technologię hostowania.

„To smutne patrzeć, jak coś, co zbudowałem, jest zabijane przez private equity noszące skórę firmy technologicznej jako przebranie” – napisał jeden z byłych pracowników na serwisie X.

Metoda „na Bending Spoons”

Dla obserwatorów rynku tech to niestety żadne zaskoczenie. Włoska firma Bending Spoons (o ironicznej nazwie nawiązującej do Matrixa) w ostatnich latach stała się grabarzem lubianych narzędzi kreatywnych. Schemat zawsze jest ten sam:

• Evernote (2023): przejęcie, drastyczne podwyżki cen, zwolnienie niemal całej załogi w USA i przeniesienie szczątkowego rozwoju do Europy.
• WeTransfer (2024): przejęcie, natychmiastowe cięcia kadrowe (zwolniono 75% załogi).
• Vimeo (2026): scenariusz się powtarza.

Oficjalny komunikat rzecznika Bending Spoons brzmi jak korporacyjna nowomowa w najgorszym wydaniu: „Jesteśmy zaangażowani w rozwój Vimeo, aby spełniać potrzeby naszej zróżnicowanej bazy użytkowników”. Trudno uwierzyć w rozwój, gdy wyrzuca się ludzi, którzy ten produkt tworzą.

Co to oznacza dla Ciebie?

Vimeo przez lata było domem dla „high-endowego” kontentu. Brak reklam, świetny odtwarzacz, opcje prywatności – to przyciągało profesjonalistów. Dziś przyszłość platformy stoi pod znakiem zapytania. Z „wydmuszkową” załogą serwis pewnie będzie działał (serwery nie wybuchną jutro), ale można spodziewać się:

• Braku nowych funkcji.
• Pogorszenia supportu.
• Agresywnego monetyzowania użytkowników (jeszcze wyższe ceny subskrypcji).

Jeśli Twoja firma polega na Vimeo jako głównym archiwum wideo – czas poszukać alternatywy. Vimeo to już nie jest firma technologiczna. To arkusz w Excelu.

There has never been a better time to join the world of Free Open Source Software or begin self-hosting essential digital services.

Some recent news that made me feel grateful for my forays into self-hosting:

1. The software Pocket, which made it easy to save, organize and read later articles in a really elegant interface shuts down this year. Another fantastic app/service to add to Mozilla‘s graveyard. Looking at YunoHost‘s app catalog, I noticed several superb alternatives to Pocket that are free, open source, and can be self-hosted, so I am thinking: never again will I give that power to an outside company. Cherry on top: the Pocket archive I requested the other day landed in my email… and the file contains an error, so I cannot download it (expired token even if it didn’t pass the 72 hour threshold they set). I look forward to self-hosting my next “save and read later” bookmark service.
2. The file sharing company WeTransfer was in the news this morning because they recently updated their terms of service, with alarming language, telling users: “You hereby grant us a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable license to use your Content for the purposes of operating, developing, commercializing, and improving the Service or new technologies or services. Such license includes the right to reproduce, distribute, modify, prepare derivative works based upon, broadcast, communicate to the public, publicly display, and perform Content. You will not be entitled to compensation for any use of Content by us under these terms.” News about this spread like wildfire with people saying this language implies content shared via WeTransfer would be used to train AI models. Now, why is this a big deal you may wonder? In my filmmaking / film editing days I would use WeTransfer DAILY to share cuts of my projects. WeTransfer is THE file sharing app for most creatives and film professionals. I used it extensively in May and June to share versions of the Fediverse promo video with my interns. Well, even if WeTransfer backtracks following the backlash, I would never again consider using it. It’s a happy coincidence that last month I set up my own NextCloud instance and I plan on using it to share files from now on. Excellent timing.
3. Tangentially-related, but an article in Engadget today revealed that users of the microblogging platform Threads rarely click on external links. The numbers are pretty shocking: 28 million referral links in 30 days for a platform with allegedly 350 million monthly active users. This is precisely why I love the Fediverse: external links are never downranked because there are no algorithms. Writers and content creators have far higher engagement with their audience because of chronological feeds and more genuine relationships.

On my to do list for the fall: looking into taking full advantage of NextCloud‘s ecosystem because this software is incredibly sophisticated… the FOSS equivalent of a Swiss Army knife.

Avant de partir dans les explications, je vous conseille, si ce n’est pas encore fait, de lire cet article.

Pingvin Share est un service de partage de fichiers autohébergé, en d’autres termes, un WeTransfer maison.

Ce dernier est installé sur un cluster Proxmox VE avec réplication et HA, dans un LXC Debian avec Docker/Portainer.

J’ai déjà un tel service installé de la même manière. C’est PsiTransfer. Mais Pingvin Share c’est un autre niveau !

L’interface est propre, et la grosse différence avec PsiTransfer, c’est qu’il y a pas mal de paramètres (options) et de fonctionnalités 👍

Vous connectez…

Et même téléverser directement sans passer par la case création de compte ! Parce que je le permets. Tout est configurable.

La différence entre avoir un compte ou non, est que, si vous n’avez pas de compte, vous ne pouvez pas supprimer vos partages manuellement et afficher le nombre de visiteurs.

Voici un exemple de téléversement sans compte…

Maintenant, on va créer un partage sans compte. Vous allez voir un message d’avertissement en jaune, ainsi que le nombre d’options disponibles 👍

Mon partage est prêt, je peux donner le lien…

Désormais, j’ai un compte, j’ai accès à « Mes partages » et « Partages inversé »…

Voici l’historique…

Voici la fonctionnalité de création d’un partage inversé. Vous devez voir ça comme un dépôt. Vous créez un partage, vous obtenez un lien de partage que vous donnez, les personnes peuvent ensuite déposer dans votre dépôt 👍

Le service est en accès libre. Soyez correcte. Le dépôt de fichiers prend de la place !

Chaque fichier déposé sur le serveur fera l’objet d’une analyse de sécurité par ClamAV.
