  1. @DoK

  2. @ZLabe "Given the body's vital requirement to maintain a core temperature of approximately 37 °C (99 °F), a sustained wet-bulb temperature exceeding 35 °C (95 °F)—equivalent to a heat index of 71 °C (160 °F)— is likely to be fatal even to fit and healthy people, semi-nude in the shade and next to a fan; at this temperature human bodies switch from shedding heat to the environment, to gaining heat from it."

  3. ... adaptation? There is no way to adapt to #heat above the human physiological limit of 35 °C #WetBulbTemperature. For children and elderly the limit is at 28°C

  4. the high temperatures in europe are really annoying and inconvenient. but this is horrible

    Daytimes highs have repeatedly crossed 45C across the country in the past two weeks, with Banda in Uttar Pradesh recording a maximum of 48.2C last Tuesday

    and ever since i heard about this phenomenon of wet bulb temperature (#^https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wet-bulb_temperature) i'm positively scared.

    because this means that there is a temperature where sweating doesn't cool you anymore. hiding in the shade and getting in front of a fan won't help then. and this temperature is not as high as i had imagined. the relation of heat and humidity in the air defines the lowest possible temperature your body can achieve by evaporating water, i.e. sweating. and if this lowest value exceeds 35°C (you fahrenheiters go look it up yourself) you are in serious health trouble. the young and the old, of course, but everybody else, too. heat gets lethal above this temperature.

    it is a dynamic relation, you can check it here: #^https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/wet-bulb

    play around with it a little bit:
    * 40°C + 80% relative humidity -> 36.73°C
    * 45°C + 60% relative humidity -> 37,5°C

    i posted about this before, but this needs much more coverage.

  5. More climate breakdown predictions:
    Weighted net-like blankets,
    Headboard extenders for bed or sleeping area.

    Previous ideas:
    Siestas,
    Nocturnal cooking and eating patterns (a bit like Ramadan but) in summer,

    Biphasic work patterns or maybe crepuscular (dawn and dusk, like cats' hunting times),
    Shorter work week like 20 hours becomes full time -- since multiple rounds of neurodegenerative covid and unacknowledged Long Covid,

    Dehumidifier to survive wet bulb humidity,
    Cotton and linen skimpy clothing covered by loose flowy plastic crap instead of just using sunblock.

  6. #FYI #heat #heatwawe #wetbulbtemperature (contd 3/3)

    If you live in a climate with at least 85% humidity on average days, get a dehumidifier (a „real“ one, 5-10L/day water extraction), additionally produces water you can use for whatever except drinking. For drinking purposes you need to cook/filter the extracted water, since it is not germ-free.
    Lots of mobile ACs are also two in one combination devices. Prices begin at ~$/€100-150 new.

  7. #FYI #heat #heatwawe #wetbulbtemperature (contd.2/3)
    ...Keep in mind you need to have at least a ventilation opening to lead the hot air exhaust pipe outside (e.g. a cat flap).

    There are much cheaper evaporation coolers, which may be useful in extremely arid regions, but in normal humidity conditions may quickly cause mold.

    A no-cost alternative in dry heat could be to hang a water soaked bed sheet in the room, in front of a ventilator if available. (contd.)
    ...

    If possible: #Insulate your house/apartment from the outside, paint your roof white, green your walls with climbing plants, stick tin foil to the windows

    Regardless where you live, if nothing else, just get a mobile AC which you can use in the smallest room in your apartment during prolonged heat domes, to get some ZZZs at night.

    The cool room should be a basement, facing North, or one in the middle of the house with no outside walls. (contd. 1/3)

  9. I saw there was a heat #WeatherWarning for parts of Southern England next week and thought temps didn't look too bad.. but just realised most of next week night time temps are over 20c and daytime up to 32c with 90+% humidity which is actually not good at all. That humidity really is pushing things into the dangerous #WetBulbTemperature zone and suspect most people are completely unaware of what that really means.

  10. "Uncompensable" means "deadly."

    "Focusing on farmers (approximately 850 million people), our model shows that an ensemble median 2.8% (15%) would be subject to several days of uncompensable heat stress yearly at 2 (4) °C of warming relative to preindustrial. Focusing on people who must walk outside to access drinking water (approximately 700 million people), 3.4% (23%) would be impacted at 2 (4) °C of warming."

    Not going to toot about the weather.

    Screw that. This sucks. This has been nearly a month of sucktastic hot and humid stupidity. My body hates it. I can't understand how anyone actually likes it.

    I think the only people who like this are either insane or have stock in an electric company.
