Something of an enigma for today's #StandingStoneSunday offering; Treen Common 'stone circle' on the West Penwith moors.
A spacious circle of standing stones, this ring is quite unlike the other Penwithian circles. The stones are closely spaced and irregular in size. It's quite possibly the remains of a circular enclosure or round, rather than a true stone circle.
This overgrown visit in June 2011.

Going Neolithic for today's #StandingStoneSunday, or is it ProppedStoneSunday? Mulfra Quoit, the remains of a chambered tomb high on the West Penwith hills. The capstone has tipped and now leans against the orthostats; it's been like that for hundreds (or even thousands) of years.

The beautifully tapering Carfury menhir in West Penwith for today's #StandingStoneSunday offering.
It stands in an area of small fields, just off an overgrown ancient lane below Ding Dong mine and Nine Maidens of Boskednan stone circle.

Porthmeor standing stone in West Penwith for today's ##StandingStoneSunday offering. It stands in a field on the north side of the spectacular coast road between Morvah and Zennor. Just to the south is a late Iron Age courtyard house settlement, and the field patterns here are mostly Bronze and Iron Age, still in use today.

A sunny, windy day on the West Penwith moors. 10 miles from St Just to Madron, we vary the site selection each time we do this walk, other than always taking in my two favourite stone circles. Today we also had two Neolithic chambered tombs, another stone circle with a hole in it, some more stones with holes in them, a handful of Bronze Age cairns and a fantastic Iron Age hillfort. I love it here, a megalithic paradise.

An is it or isn't it standing stone for today's #StandingStoneSunday
Built into a Cornish hedge* in the lane leading to Ding Dong mine and Nine Maidens stone circle, this lovely tapering monolith is not recorded as prehistoric, but given the plethora of Bronze Age sites close by, it looks a good bet to me.

*formed of two parallel dry stone walls with an earth infill between them, out of which vegetation grows.

One of the holed stones on Kenidjack Common, West Penwith for today's #StandingStoneSunday offering.
There are five holed stones here (with possible remains of a sixth), upright slabs of hard Cornish granite with a hole bored through by hand tools in the Bronze Age. They stand on the Moor near Tregeseal stone circle.

Long shadows for today's #StandingStoneSunday the fabulous Boswens menhir on the West Penwith moors.
The stone is very asymmetrical and looks different from every angle. If you walk along the Tinner's Way below it, the stone appears as a tall figure on the skyline, which turns to watch you as you pass.
It's intervisible with the marvellous Chûn Quoit Neolithic tomb.

One of my very favourite sites for today's #StandingStoneSunday - Tregeseal stone circle, on the West Penwith moors.
There were originally two circles here, but only a couple of stones remain of the second.
Inevitably the stones are Maidens turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath.

A pair of lovely stones for today's #StandingStoneSunday. These are The Sisters, near Drift in West Penwith.
This area of fertile farmland boasts many standing stones, and two stone circles.
Inevitably in folklore they were turned to stone for not attending church.

A summer's day in West Penwith for today's #StandingStoneSunday
Men Scryfa, a probable Bronze Age standing stone later reused in the post-Roman period with the addition of an inscription commemorating Rialobran ('Royal Raven').
This visit June 2010 on a walk from St Just across the moors.
Unfortunately the stone was vandalised in late May this year, someone poured a flammable liquid over the top and set fire to it:
