THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
The Chilcotin post was an outpost of Fort Alexandria, on the Fraser River south of #Quesnel. It was built in 1829 as a temporary post, and served the Chilcotin region for a few years before it was closed down. Its field of oats still comes up every year. #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/chilcotin/ -
THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
When Alexander Anderson came into the Columbia district with the incoming York Factory Express, he heard the story of an Indigenous man who had himself buried alive in the same grave dug for his deceased and beloved son. Was it one story or two? #YorkFactoryExpress #Journeys #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/buried-alive/ -

THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
A major part of Studying history is noticing when things changed. I presumed for a number of years that the Columbia Boats on the river were paddled like canoes, and not rowed like York Boats. In John Work's journals I learned differently. In 1828 or so they changed from paddles to oars and travelled much more easily up and down the river. #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/oars-or-paddles/ -

Samuel Black, the ex-NWC bully, joined the HBC two years after coalition and came to the west side of the Rocky Mountains, where he served until he was murdered in 1841. To me, he was a fascinating man who helped to build the new brigade trail north to Fort Alexandria! #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/samuel-black/ -
