  1. North Carolina has had 9 cases of West Nile virus so far this year. 3 cases were in Durham. Mosquitoes carry it; Durham did targeted mosquito spraying within ~1 mile of Trinity Park. Ok, good.

I wonder how TP wound up w/ 3 diagnosed cases? My understanding is that ~1% or less of cases are diagnosed. I wonder if, maybe for economic reasons, folks in TP were simply more likely to be diagnosed? dconc.gov/DurhamCo-News/Public #DurhamNC #WestNile #arbovirus #publicHealth

  2. Dallas County has reported its first confirmed case of #WestNile in 2025. Recently, MA's Public Health Dept reported the first finding of #TripleE — Eastern Equine encephalitis — infected mosquitoes this year.
Aug-Sept is when some nasty mosquito-spread diseases emerge. Be prudent: Use bug spray.

  3. In Italia 89 casi di West Nile, in sette giorni sono più che raddoppiati – Sanità

Sono più che raddoppiati nell’arco di sette giorni, passando da 32 a 89, i casi confermati di virus…

  4. As someone who attracts the most voracious mosquitoes, I’m a little concerned about the news that West Nile virus has been found locally in these flying predators.

No vaccine available. Just get bit and suffer through vomiting and severe headaches. Sounds lovely.

  5. Mosquito in Cincinnati neighborhood positive for West Nile virus

A mosquito in Madisonville has tested positive for West Nile virus, the #Cincinnati Health Department announced.

It's the first time this year so far that West Nile has been positively detected in the Greater Cincinnati area. #Ohio #Virus #WestNile

Madisonville is one of the 52 neighborhoods of Cincinnati.

  6. First #detection of #WestNile virus {#WNV} in #UK #mosquitoes, gov.uk/government/news/first-d

UKHSA says there is no evidence to suggest ongoing circulation of the virus in birds or mosquitos in the UK and the risk to the general public is very low.

  7. The Transmission (Headlines):

"A New Hampshire man is fighting for his life because of a mosquito bite. Fifty-four-year-old Joe Casey of Kensington has tested positive for three mosquito-borne viruses, including eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus..... He was positive for EEE, for West Nile, and St. Louis Encephalitis, but the CDC, the infectious disease doctors, they don’t know which one is making him this sick..."

  8. Quite a bit of overlap in severe cases of eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile virus. Per NY Dept of Health: "... sudden onset of headache, high fever, neck stiffness, muscle weakness, altered mental status, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) or the membranes of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) or coma." #EEE #WestNile #mosquitoes #disease #birds health.ny.gov/diseases/west_ni

  9. I remember being amazed when one of my patients tested simultaneously positive for flu, strep, and mono.

There's someone with #EEE, St Louis encephalitis, and #WestNile -- all possibly from a single mosquito.

I don't think of New England as a hotbed of mosquito-borne illness, yet here we are.

  10. I wrote a lot about #WestNile back in the aughts. It never went away, but coverage of it ebbed substantially in the years since. So I put together this quick explainer about the virus that hospitalized Tony Fauci. statnews.com/2024/08/24/what-y

  11. At my community garden there are several dozen containers and objects that collect stagnant water. And because most people ignore their allotments for weeks at a time, or abandon them entirely, the sites are home to tens of thousands of mosquito larvae. 12. Repel, control, and eat mosquitos

#Mosquitos. They can be an infuriating nuisance. Occasionally (but increasingly) they can be a vector of disease in my part of the world.

This post is going to touch briefly upon some diseases they spread, then focus mostly on which repellents work safely, and conclude with two ways to reduce their numbers in an environmentally friendly way - creating a breeding trap, or feeding them to a voracious, mystery predator.

  17. #USA, First #Texas Case of #WestNile Virus and a Global Increase in #Dengue Virus Cases Highlights Need for #Mosquito #Precautions, dshs.texas.gov/news-alerts/fir

Public health officials urge Texans to be vigilant in protecting against mosquito bites after confirming the first Texas case of West Nile virus and 10 travel-associated dengue cases for 2024. Precautions should be taken in Texas and while traveling internationally to countries where dengue is endemic.

  19. Here in #Maine, we saw beaches closed down because of contamination from overflowing sewage which ended up in the ocean from extreme rain events. Expect more of this as #extremeweather increases. Also, keep in mind that humans aren't the only ones being affected by these events -- plants, animals, microflora, bacteria levels, algae, etc.

Explainer: How #ClimateChange is making the world sick

    By Gloria Dickie
    December 4, 2023

"'#ExtremeWeather events are becoming extreme health events,' said Martin Edlund, CEO of global health nonprofit Malaria No More.

"Here's how Climate Change is harming people's health across the world today, and what countries might expect in the future.

    VECTOR-BORNE DISEASES
"#Mosquitoes that carry viruses including #dengue, #malaria, #WestNile and #Zika are shifting into new parts of the world as warmer temperatures and #HeavyRains create more hospitable conditions for them to breed.

    MURKY WATERS
"#Storms and #flooding wrought by climate change are allowing other infectious water-borne diseases to proliferate as well.

    EXTREME HEAT AND SMOKY SKIES
"#HeatStress - one of the more obvious health impacts of #GlobalWarming - is projected to impact hundreds of millions of people as temperatures continue to climb through the next few decades."

  20. Everyone involved in mosquito control in the United States should know about the Spartan Mosquito Pro Tech, a plastic tube filled with water, sugar, yeast, and boric acid. Here's what the company claims:

"Kills mosquitoes that may carry West Nile Virus, Zika Virus, Dengue Fever, St. Louis encephalitis, Western equine encephalitis, and Eastern equine encephalitis for up to 30 days."

I tried the tubes in my yard and concluded they did not work. My review in case you need details: colinpurrington.com/2020/04/sp
