And, Florida isn't alone in mosquito-carried disease: Philadelphia has reported its first cases of West Nile virus for the year. Consider this a reminder to get rid of standing water -- garbage can lids, saucers under outdoor flowerpots, discarded tires, etc.

🦟 NEW: Researchers tested how three South #Florida mosquito species, Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus, responded to 119 human volunteers using a device that let #insects approach without biting.
They matched each species to specific #skin odors and bacterial communities. Each #mosquito favored different #microbes, and no single person attracted all three species.

First West Nile Virus Death of 2026 Reported in LA County - Public Health Urges Residents to Take Steps to Prevent the Spread of Mosquito-Borne Illness
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has confirmed the first local death due to West Nile virus for the 2026 mosquito season. A resident of the San Fernando Valley was hospitalized and died from neurological illness caused by severe West Nile virus.
"This tragic loss is a reminder of the serious threat posed by mosquito-borne diseases, including West Nile virus and dengue. Everyone can take simple steps to reduce their risk. These include using insect repellent, getting rid of standing water where mosquitoes breed, and making sure windows and door have tight-fitting screens without holes or tears. Small actions like these can make a big difference in preventing illness.”

North Carolina has had 9 cases of West Nile virus so far this year. 3 cases were in Durham. Mosquitoes carry it; Durham did targeted mosquito spraying within ~1 mile of Trinity Park. Ok, good.
I wonder how TP wound up w/ 3 diagnosed cases? My understanding is that ~1% or less of cases are diagnosed. I wonder if, maybe for economic reasons, folks in TP were simply more likely to be diagnosed? https://dconc.gov/DurhamCo-News/Public-Health/Final-Round-of-Targeted-ULV-Spraying-to-be-Conducted-October-15-16.htm #DurhamNC #WestNile #arbovirus #publicHealth
