There's a weird backstory of once upon a time, I was a yarntrepreneur, a yarn maker if you will.Stephen happened upon my yarn in a paris wool shop, bought it, and made it into a pattern.
I was so, SO THRILLED.Later, I had to face the music of what was happening with my relationship to the farmer and the industry, and shut it down.
I felt so, so, horrible for what happened to Stephen, but he then went on to put his own yarn line out, so all good!

Knitting with a pile of Noro + Cracksilk haze aka Rowan's Kidsilk Haze + others
2020: purchased the yarn via the free internet kindly offered by the 4 star hotel I was quarantined in, in Sydney, where I was one of the first. I didn't find any Noro in Japan, so made up for it by ordering by the bag from Seattle Knits in Seattle, who had a lovely convo with me over the phone. Super fun knit 🧶

Clue #2 - nine curvy bands of color - each held to the next with narrow eyelet strip in pink mohair.
Teaching myself to enjoy the process. Turns out there is no race against time, just an old habit to rush, that I'm working on eradicating.

Yes there is stitch counting for short rows. Using stitch markers helped a lot with both those things. Looks more orange here than in real life.
I go back and forth between liking this #MKALand finding it all too busy. I proceed, having faith in #StephenWest and #WestKnits. Onward!

@I_am_a_plant Thanks so much! I never seem to finish these MKALs on time, have quit more than one in early stages. Stephen West's shawls are so great, they are worth knitting, MKAL or not, on schedule with clue release dates or not. His video support and additional material (like performances of Stephen singing) is terrific. I found clue #1 to be soooo hard, could not conquor the brioche, so did the garter stitch option, which I think looks fine. Always a satisfying adventure with #WestKnits!

First finished knitting project in years: the reversible Basketweaver beanie by Westknits (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-basketweaver-hat), with yarn from Northbound Knitting (https://www.northboundknitting.com/) and Yarnalia, purchased at Good Grief Yarn in Toronto (https://goodgriefyarn.com/).
All pics are from unblocked product, since I finished it about 45 minutes before saying goodbye to the lovely guest who stayed with me for the past few weeks, and who was the recipient of the beanie. I gave them a small bottle of Eucalan and will instruct them on how to wash and block the beanie. Hope they will enjoy it!
Have good memories especially of knitting during a Sunday afternoon of lunch, drinks, snacks and board games at my other friend's place ❤️

Loving how this Mingling Daisies Shawl is coming out! And have seriously fallen in love with this 30% yak 40% merino 30% silk blend from Anzula Lana.
Just one or two more repeats of the three stripe sequence to cast off with an i-cord finish.
A very mentally stabilizing and clarifying knit - did a lot of good thinking during this one. Recommend!

Here we go, several bands of overall shawl pattern down, 3 or more to go! Yak is magic yarn - so strong I can't break it with my hands, so soft it feels much like cashmere. And that color over a gray base. Loving it!

Ooh-la-la Fiber Folks, this yarn is a revelation! Anzula's hand-dyed Lana - merino, silk and yak. Yak!
It's like butter. And the strength! I cannot break the yarn with my bare hands, even though it's just fingering weight.
Re color - it looks to be dyed on a distinctly gray base. Don't know about other shades in Lana line.

Here's another shot - much more accurate color in this one.
Now the mosaic color has gone all dark and high contrast in this next large band of triangles, followed by a deep edging, all in the contrast color.
SO. As someone else recently posted here, "Meet the shawl where it is." Therefore, I'm just gonna go with the flow, see what happens!

Iy's a solid design and a relaxing knit. Curious how much it might open up when blocked. It 'feels' substantial, like a core-of-winter type shawl. Warm, squishy, something to both wear and take a nap with!

I did it! Finished the #AuroraCabinShawl designed by #StephenWest and subject of this year's Hiber-Knit-Along, in which we all cast on, on Dec. 26th.
Hard work, also such fun. A big adventure. Mostly used Jade Sapphire silk-cashmere fingering weight yarn - correct yardage but lighter weight than pattern specified.
Will get better shots outside tomorrow, the color is off in these shots. My CNA Christine is modeling. What a thrill to complete it!

I've been working on the i-cord bind-off of over 1,000 stitches on this WIP... Knit 2, knit 2 together through back, slide 3 stitches from right needle back to left. One stitch bound off. Repeat 999 more times... 1/2

This is it, Mastoknitters! The adventure is almost over - just five more rows of chevron border, then a final row in contrast color (a wonderful mottled green), then bind off....
And then weave in ends. And block. And final shots/notes to Ravelry project page. I'm so excited! I really threw myself into this one. It has been a great knit, wonderful pacing, and I learned a lot. Now for those four other WIPs!

I've reached the point where the WIP is so big - approaching the legendary "shlanket" size designer Stephen West is known for - that it's hard to spread out to show the whole thing, until it's off needles. Every picture I post looks like the last one, but I have to call out my 6 rows achieved today. Loooong rows.
This weekend, wrap up 5-color band, knit deep chevron border. Then block! Then wear!

I am pleased with it, the purple was the only full skein and worked well keeping it all ‘contained’, but not dominating (I didn’t want a purple shawl - my initial aim was an overall ‘red’, but didn’t have enough reds to achieve that). l adore colour, but I am usually much more ‘careful’ - the 4 #Westknits patterns I’ve done have broadened my choices, although my favourite colourwise is one that is more tonal. I’m really interested to see yours when it’s finished.

@KarenStrickholm I love your muted palette! I wanted to join in with #AuroraCabinShawl but wanted to use up partial skeins so mine is rather over the top colourful and at first I hated it, but by the time I’d finished I was happy with my combinations born of necessity. It is huge.

Dear Mastoknitterati ~ Finally over halfway hump on the #AuroraCabinShawl! This has been a challenging, rewarding knit. There is only ever one color being worked per row. The five-color bands are punctuated by dropped stitches being passed from row to row and then "forked" with two more at end of each main drop. It's a simple motif with near-endless application. Now for the final patterned section, then a deep chevron band to finish. Design by Stephen West of #WestKnits.

I feel The same about West mostly, but as I work this pattern and watch his videos I'm appreciating that he really does have a strong sense of design. I don't care for his palettes generally. I wanted to do the #AuroraCabinShawl as a personal creative challenge - how much can I tone down color contrast and muddy hues while still keeping pattern visually readable? Here's a shot that shows three sections, and all five colors used.
