  3. Hype for the Future 64/284: The Springfield Museums

Introduction Within the downtown area of the City of Springfield in Hampden County, Massachusetts, the Springfield Museums contain the most significant elements of history within the “Western Gateway to New England.” The largest city in the Pioneer Valley, Springfield is also home or the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, albeit not on the campus of the Springfield Museums. The Museums Within the Springfield Museums, the specific museums include the Dr. Seuss Museum and […]

  4. On the Horizon 23C: The State Forests of Western Mass

Western Massachusetts is very differently organized from the more dominant eastern side of the Commonwealth. Throughout much of Berkshire County in particular, the state forests share names with potentially namesake towns, a feature that also continues into select portions of Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, and Worcester Counties. In Hampden County, Tolland and Granville are names of towns where state forests exist under such town names. In Berkshire County, Otis and Florida may be additional […]

  6. #Massachusetts: Find a local #FoodBank

Need food? A local food bank can help you put food on your table so you don't go hungry.

Notice: President #Trump is currently choosing not to issue November #SNAP benefits that help you and many families put food on the table.

You also may have your benefits cut starting in November because of changes Congressional Republicans and President Trump enacted in the '#OneBigBeautifulBill.' Learn more and check back for updates at mass.gov/

  9. Edit: I think it’s probably a baby grackle!

I would love help with a #BirdID if anyone can assist!

I saw this baby bird in Western Massachusetts on a reedy tuft near the edge of a marsh. I think it was a little bigger than an adult American robin.

  10. Barn swallows, seen on May 23, 2025, in Amherst, Massachusetts

They were swooping over a field in the rain. They would periodically land on the fence next to the trail and splay out their wings like they were trying to get dry.

  19. This raccoon has been frequenting the yard at all hours of the day recently. It appears to be healthy, although it’s on the small side, and is acting normal, apart from the unusual schedule.

I looked up whether I should be concerned that it’s out during the day, and the consensus seems to be that while daytime activity can be a sign of rabies, there are plenty of other reasons why a raccoon might be out during the day. If the only thing unusual about a raccoon’s behavior or appearance is that it’s out during the day, then there’s no particular reason to assume that it has rabies.

(While I’m not worried that this raccoon has rabies, I’m still keeping my distance. I took this picture while standing on the porch, and it’s zoomed in significantly. The raccoon scurried off when I started walking down the porch steps, so it is appropriately wary of people.)

  20. #WesternMassachusetts is also having #wildfire issues because of the dry, windy conditions!

#Northampton #wildfire ‘doubled’ overnight as ‘significant’ flames hit region, officials say

    By Irene Rotondo
    Updated: Nov. 02, 2024

"A brush fire burning in the woods of Northampton has doubled in size overnight, the city‘s police and fire departments announced Saturday. It’s one of 'several significant' fires reported in the region in the past 24 hours.

"It’s now around 40 acres in size, and is in the middle of a conservation area running along a valley and swamp.

"'A high wind yesterday [Friday] brought a lot more leaves, including especially oak leaves down, which put that dry fuel on a fire,' Jake Wark, spokesperson for the State Fire Marshal’s office, told MassLive on Saturday morning.

"'Put some more wind behind it, and that just kicks the fire right back up again,' he said."

  21. The understated, unselfconscious boosterism of this map's caption:

"Map showing location of interesting places"

(From The Flow of Time in the Connecticut Valley, by two geologists, George Bain and Howard Meyerhoff, originally published in 1942, republished in 1976)

These include an asbestos mine, several lead mines, and Mt. Sugarloaf, among other items.

  22. #Westhampton #Massachusetts, is that near you?

A friend is somewhat desperate for a new, temporary housing situation, post-break-up, ideally for now through the next 3-4 months.

Do you know of a potential low-cost living space (roommates? Spare room? sublet?) while they get back on their feet? They're good people, employed at a community-focused non-profit org, non-smoker, and are a member of a marginalized group.

    @ me for details.

  23. This is Tiny, one of the raccoons that lives near my house. Tiny is most easily recognizable because one of her eyes does not glow in nighttime camera footage. She can also be identified by her ears, which are particularly close-set on the top of her head and have some notches.

I first saw Tiny last summer, when she visited the yard a few times while she was clearly nursing a litter of kits. She was very small, and I was worried about whether she would make it since she seemed underweight.

She has continued to visit the yard periodically. Earlier this year, she showed up in the yard with her tongue sticking out, as if she might have some kind of jaw injury. She was a lot bigger than when I first saw her, though, so she seemed to be eating enough.

She's come by the yard the last two nights for snacks. Last night, I caught her in the crabapple tree eating fruit. She looks fantastic – very big and fluffy for winter!

  24. I think... I think there was just an otter in my yard?!? Is that what this is? I've never seen a wild otter!

(Link is to a short YouTube video of an animal – an otter, I guess! – in a yard, approaching a water bowl, and then loping away. The video was taken with a wildlife camera)
