This raccoon has been frequenting the yard at all hours of the day recently. It appears to be healthy, although it’s on the small side, and is acting normal, apart from the unusual schedule.
I looked up whether I should be concerned that it’s out during the day, and the consensus seems to be that while daytime activity can be a sign of rabies, there are plenty of other reasons why a raccoon might be out during the day. If the only thing unusual about a raccoon’s behavior or appearance is that it’s out during the day, then there’s no particular reason to assume that it has rabies.
(While I’m not worried that this raccoon has rabies, I’m still keeping my distance. I took this picture while standing on the porch, and it’s zoomed in significantly. The raccoon scurried off when I started walking down the porch steps, so it is appropriately wary of people.)
