One of the lessons of the New Zealand Land Wars #NZ 1860s was that earth-shelters / bunkers can be sufficient protection against bombardment.
This was forgotten and #WWI #WesternFront happened.
And here we are in #Gaza, with #Israel #USA, #GB etc having done #Genocide up top, and #Hamas fighters still emerging from #Tunnels.

Ypres and Passchendaele - went to a museum with recreated trenches. This place is beautiful, and the museum was fascinating. And poppies really do blow in Flanders Fields.

But there was no holding him back.
He finally managed to join the 1st #RoyalInniskillingFusiliers and arrived in #Gallipoli on July 18th, 1915, just in time to join 'The Skins' in the disastrous #SuvlaBay landing, where the battalion took heavy losses.
Bertie survived his first campaign, though he suffered a serious injury and lost most of the use of his left hand. He had yet to experience the #WesternFront.
