Zapisywanie cyfrowej historii świata staje się coraz trudniejsze i znacznie droższe.

Gorączka związana ze sztuczną inteligencją doprowadziła do gigantycznego popytu na dyski twarde i SSD w korporacyjnych centrach danych. W efekcie kluczowe projekty archiwizacyjne muszą walczyć o każdy gigabajt przestrzeni, a rynek konsumencki boryka się z dotkliwymi podwyżkami i brakami sprzętu.

Ceny dysków mocno w górę, a giganci zmieniają priorytety

Skala podwyżek na rynku nośników danych jest niezwykle wyraźna. Z danych serwisu PC Part Picker wynika, że od października ubiegłego roku średnie ceny wielu modeli dysków wzrosły o ponad 150 procent. W skrajnych przypadkach różnice są jeszcze bardziej drastyczne – świetnym przykładem jest 2-terabajtowy zewnętrzny dysk SSD firmy Samsung, który zeszłej jesieni kosztował 159 dolarów, a dziś wyceniany jest na 575 dolarów. Co ciekawe w polskim sklepie Samsunga zewnętrzny SSD Samsung T7 o pojemności 2 TB można kupić za 1149 zł. To bardzo dużo, ale… taniej niż 575 dolarów.

Sytuacja jest na tyle poważna, że giganci technologiczni rewidują swoje strategie. Z powodu ogromnego zapotrzebowania w centrach danych AI, firma Micron podjęła decyzję o wycofaniu marki Crucial z rynku konsumenckiego, aby skupić się na obsłudze strategicznych klientów. Podobnie wygląda sytuacja u Western Digital – producent przyznaje, że znaczna część jego zapasów magazynowych na 2026 rok trafiła już w ręce klientów korporacyjnych.

Podwójny cios dla archiwistów internetu

Dla organizacji non-profit ten rynkowy trend to ogromne wyzwanie operacyjne i finansowe. Ograniczenia budżetowe odczuwa między innymi Wikimedia Foundation. Problem wprost komunikuje również Brewster Kahle, twórca Internet Archive. Jego organizacja każdego dnia gromadzi ponad 100 terabajtów nowych materiałów, a dotychczasowe archiwum liczy już 210 petabajtów. Preferowane przez nich dyski o pojemności 28-30 TB są obecnie niedostępne lub ich ceny osiągają zaporowe pułapy.

Brak taniej przestrzeni dyskowej to jednak tylko połowa problemu. Archiwiści otrzymują właśnie technologiczny „podwójny cios”. Właściciele stron internetowych masowo blokują boty, próbując bronić swoich treści przed firmami trenującymi modele językowe. Niestety, rykoszetem dostają projekty archiwizacyjne. Zablokowane crawlery nie mogą zapisywać historycznych wersji witryn, co realnie utrudnia zachowanie cyfrowego dziedzictwa.

Pospolite ruszenie wstrzymuje zakupy

Rynkowe zawirowania uderzają również w pasjonatów, akademików i domowych archiwistów. Na popularnych forach zrzeszających tzw. „data hoarderów” użytkownicy masowo ogłaszają kapitulację. Wielu z nich decyduje się jedynie na utrzymanie obecnych archiwów, całkowicie rezygnując z zakupów nowego sprzętu do czasu ustabilizowania się cen.

To doskonale pokazuje ukryty koszt rewolucji napędzanej przez sztuczną inteligencję. Błyskawiczny rozwój algorytmów wymaga potężnych, fizycznych zasobów, co bezpośrednio przekłada się na globalny rynek podzespołów. Dopóki zapotrzebowanie serwerowni na nośniki nie ulegnie spłaszczeniu, cyfrowe biblioteki będą zmuszone do podejmowania coraz trudniejszych decyzji o tym, co i jak ratować przed zapomnieniem.

The prices that #Samsung and #WesternDigital are charging for their m.2 SSDs is criminal. Even if the prices come back down I'd rather buy from another company. This is ridiculous.

The SDs, the SSDs, the HDDs, the DIMMs, the SO-DIMMs, the SoCs, the CPUs - let alone the GPUs. Anything containing chips will be highly overpriced due to #AI and #SiliconValley financing basically lining up billion dollar bar tabs while disturbing every hardware market in sight. You could say that's by design.

I have used WD drives for years and even went through their warranty service before with no issues.

This may all change now.

I shipped them a drive about 2 months ago and am still struggling to get a replacement for my home server. Looks like they have given EVERYTHING to AI and can’t even fulfill the warranty.

Need to find a 8TB drive now myself as I can’t rely on them.

This is not good.

SSDs? Overpriced and, while still able to be bought (today), they'll start getting scarce. They are also no good for long-term, unpowered storage.

All of this is because of hyperscalers¹ sucking ravenously on the teat of the AI bubble. When the bubble finally burts—and it will—the second-hand computer bits market is going to be **LIT**.

¹ Hyperscaler: a tech-sounding name for a person or organisation that thinks big is good, therefore bloody enormous is better, no matter what the expense to others or the environment.
