Season of the Serpent closes out the Nameless Republic trilogy, a West African inspired fantasy series full of secrets, lost magic, villains, conquest, and rebellion. It has been an incredible pleasure to follow the entwining and intersecting stories of scholar Danso, warrior Lilong, schemer Esheme, and several people they’ve met along the way. On the surface, it seems simple: one scholar discovers secrets that set him on a path he can’t backtrack as the empire he leaves behind transforms, rises, and falls. But the details and intricate subplots bring the world and the story to life, offering readers something rather meaty to sink their teeth into.
After the events of the second book, one of the Nameless islands has been destroyed, Danso and Lilong torn apart by a violent storm. Where Lilong, her lover, and her brother find a home with a coastal people that only desires to protect themselves from the two forces clashing over fallen Bassa, the new Nameless Republic and Kangalaland, Danso finds himself on a journey that will hopefully lead him to redemption. Meanwhile, the Nameless Republic, led by Ifiot and Kakutan, and Kangalaland are threatening battle as one tries to force everyone else to ally with them while the other has turned to conquest. And, elsewhere, Biemwense tries to stay out of it, but a mysterious woman asking about Danso has found her.
This trilogy has been violent and cruel and sometimes unsettling beyond that. Okungbowa has not shied away from anything, and has seemingly no compunction about putting his characters through the wringer. Despite how unsettled parts have made me, I’ve found it impossible to not devour each book. I’ve grown so fond of Danso and Lilong, and Esheme to a lesser degree. Their journeys have not been easy, and that might be why I love these books so much. No matter what is thrown at them, they go through it and always come out changed, whether for better or worse, on the other side, and watching those transformations has been a delight. But I also love just how much is packed into each book. They feel massive and epic, and yet they’re not overly long. Season of the Serpent felt like it should have been twice as long as it was, what with everything packed into it, and yet it’s under 500 pages and never felt rushed. The characters carry the story particularly well, their journeys culminating in a surprising yet appropriate way.
Initially, the first book focused on Danso, Lilong, and Esheme. Then the second book felt more like Lilong’s story. Season of the Serpent continued that, making Lilong a key part of most of the novel. Danso and Esheme weren’t forgotten, but there’s more going on outside of them. I didn’t love how they felt more like secondary characters as Lilong and Kakutan felt like they stepped into the forefront. They’re wonderful women and I adore them, but I went into this trilogy thinking Danso was the lead character. I love his scholarly character, and I loved how he struggled so much with being a good man trying to do good things but still managing to be corrupted and having to find a path to redemption. But this story felt like it grew to be too large for him to carry. It was lovely to see Lilong step up, but I also sorely missed Danso by the end. Esheme, on the other hand, was never really a favorite of mine, but I appreciated her thirst for power, and the conclusion sent a bit of a shiver down my spine.
For as much as was packed into Season of the Serpent and how leisurely it sometimes felt for the length, I thought everything managed to be almost neatly tied up. Everything had already been set in motion, all the key players were in their proper place, and there were still a few more secrets to reveal. Season of the Serpent held my attention, and I flew through it. It was very nicely broken into parts that lead up to a great war and the aftermath, with Bimenwense, Kakutan, Lilong, Esheme, and Danso getting a chance to say where they were and what their next step towards that war needed to be. While they were scattered across the map, seeing them meet again was wonderful. I loved the friendships they had developed, and I liked how the story leaned on those to create the emotional core. It was wonderful to see their stories conclude, albeit with a slice of bitterness.
Season of the Serpent was the perfect end to this trilogy. I loved seeing the characters march to the finish line, loved watching how things were so fluid right up to the end. Everything and everyone felt perfectly in character, and I loved how many of the characters were offered the chance to pay for their crimes or given an opening to redemption. This was a fitting conclusion, and I’m sorry to leave their world and these characters behind.

"Some of the Museums’ summer activities are returning favorites, like the return of Giant Bubbles with Mr. Vinny, a show on the Quadrangle each Friday afternoon that encourages children to watch, chase and pop bubbles. The Toe Jam #Puppet Band, a children’s entertainment troupe that combines #music, #puppetry and #storytelling, also returns.
"Other activities, like hands-on experiences in the Cat’s Corner, Hasbro Games Art Discovery Center and #SparkLab, were curated by the Museum’s education staff for this year’s summer programming.
"In the Cat’s Corner, located inside of The Amazing World of #DrSeuss Museum, guests can read some of Ted Geisel’s stories and take part in facilitated art activities. In the Hasbro Games Art Discovery Center, located inside of the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, guests can participate in activities that range from arts and crafts to dress-up and puppet play. In the Spark!Lab, located inside of the Springfield Science Museum, make projects inspired by inventions and innovations in American history, or invent something totally new.
" 'Activities can change from week to week in our drop-in spaces, so there are new experiences often for visitors looking to visit more than once this summer,' Garner said.
A focus on music
"The summer schedule also offered the opportunity for more live music at the Museums.
" 'We’ve had musical performances on and off throughout the years, and they’re always really special events, especially when the weather’s nice and we can have them out on our #QuadrangleGreen and kids can dance and #sing and #play,' said Larissa Murray, Director of Education for the Springfield Museums. 'But we wanted to make it more of a featured event, something that you could plan for as opposed to it just happening now and again.'
"Wednesdays are a strong turn-out day for the Museums, Murray explained, making it the perfect opportunity to test out a new music program.
"As a result, the Springfield Museums are offering a 'Music on Wednesdays' program this summer, with a different group or performer scheduled each week. "Now open seven days a week through Aug. 15, the museums are offering a slate of activities including hands-on exhibitions, live entertainment on the Quadrangle Green, and music inspired by cultures from around the globe.
